Power station: A quieter generator arrives at the 9th Precinct

A quieter generator has replaced the one powering systems at the 9th Precinct stationhouse on Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue since early summer. 

The original generator was installed after an electrical problem left parts of the building without adequate power, affecting the stationhouse's internet, phones, and air conditioning.
According to a source familiar with the situation, the replacement generator — installed sometime last week — was brought in after neighbors raised concerns about the noise from the original unit. 

"From day one, nobody thought it was an ideal situation — not for the cops, not for the precinct, and especially not for the neighbors who have to deal with it 24 hours a day," the source said. "We've been trying to find some type of solution." 

The source said various ideas were considered, including adding noise-reduction equipment to the original generator, before the quieter replacement was installed.

"I haven't received one complaint since the day it was put in place," the source said. 

As for when normal electrical service will be restored, there is still no timeline. 

"That's the question we keep asking every day," the source said. "No one has an update." 

The source said the underlying issue remains the same: the electrical service currently reaching the building isn't sufficient to power the entire stationhouse, so the generator is necessary to run systems including the internet and air conditioning.

    I am curious as to why the 9th is having this ongoing problem with the electrical system. It was completely demolished and reconstructed, reopening in 2007. Seems like it should be fully functioning still.

    What additional electrical equipment could possibly have been added since 2007 that has made the service inadequate. At a minimum the service would be 400 amps / 3 phase., which is what that generator is providing ( if not less). I would believe they would have installed more like an 800 amp / 3 phase service. The reason given makes no sense.
