Two Lower East Side jazz legends revisit their first collaboration

Longtime Lower East Side neighbors Matthew Shipp and William Parker — pianist and bassist, respectively — are revisiting the first album they recorded together. 

Zo, the duo's 1993 debut, is being reissued in November by longtime indie label ESP-Disk'. It also marks the album's first-ever vinyl release. (The reissue will also be available on CD, as well as for download and streaming.)

Ahead of the release, ESP-Disk' recently shared the duo's interpretation of George Gershwin's "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess, available on Bandcamp. 

Meanwhile, Shipp also appears on "Let's Make a Memory," a track on Goin' Local, the first solo album by another Lower East Side music fixture, Lenny Kaye. The album was released on July 17. (Read this NPR interview with Kaye.)
