The community fridge outside the Sixth Street Community Center is no more

Photos by Stacie Joy

The community fridge outside the Sixth Street Community Center between Avenue B and Avenue C has been removed.

According to a source familiar with the situation, the Department of Sanitation issued a violation related to the fridge, prompting NYCHA to remove it last week.
There are already calls for its return...
The One Love Community Fridge arrived here in November 2024 after the longstanding fridge outside Trinity Lower East Side on Ninth Street and Avenue B was dismantled.

Community fridges provide food around the clock, though keeping them clean and regularly monitored has been an ongoing challenge at the neighborhood locations EVG has covered.

With this removal, no community fridges are currently operating in the East Village.

If you are hungry, every public school offers bagged food. PS 19 is on 1st ave between 11th and 12th street.

Really? Even if you don't attend or have a child that attends? Do you have to show proof?
