Japanese grocery Yamadaya coming to Avenue A

A new tenant is coming to 33 Avenue A, between Second and Third Streets.

Signage for Yamadaya, a Japanese grocery store with several Manhattan locations, has arrived outside the former Budget Mart space.

Yamadaya sells Japanese groceries, snacks, sweets, household goods and beauty products. (The Yamadaya website lists a fall opening here.)

As previously reported, Budget Mart opened in November 2024, selling everything from kitchen appliances and household supplies to clothing, luggage and an impressive assortment of slippers.

The business was recently listed for sale for $90,000, with monthly rent advertised at $6,400.

For all the complaints about high prices these days, the neighborhood apparently wasn't clamoring for a Budget Mart.
