I'm glad they're fixing the clock, which is one of the last remaining Pop charms of that building. It stopped working around 9/11 -- maybe right on that date -- and it seemed like they'd never fix it.
ReplyDeleteI was lucky enough to live in that bldg for the first five years I was in New York. A nice pad with a terrace on the 7th floor setback. Killer views of the Bridge. Paid way less than I'm sure they'll go for now: a job perq I appreciate. I miss outside space! But I'm glad I was there while I had the chance. (For the record, I'd much rather have lived there with students than with the douchebags that will almost certainly be there now!)

I'm also curious about the Web image. A preppy version of Karen O seemingly really excited/happy about something.
I've heard that Rockrose's many other superfluous towers downtown already catered to NYU students and recent grads: they realized that by pooling resources (parental resources?) they could rent rooms very like the ones NYU offered downtown without having to deal with pesky things like security guards and regulations on visitors. So maybe that's why Karen O's so happy to be down there.
ReplyDeleteIf you get a chance to see an open house of those 7th floor apts, check them out. The terraces at the south end of the building wrap around onto the John St side and are the size of small sports fields. A friend of mine who's done research on the building says that the terraces used to have murals painted on them, visible from the higher floors of the towers. When we lived there, though, people didn't just look down from on high, they often threw little presents down to us: cigarette butts, condoms, paper airplanes made of pages from Hustler. Ah ... the young.
That's a hell of a lot of apartments to go on the market down there, though. I'd also be interested in knowing how much they're going for.

ReplyDeleteI adore that clock. Once upon a time I worked on John Street and at lunch I liked to sit on those funny backwards chairs that were under the clock. It reminds me - I'm glad that boss (who fired me) went to jail, karma is a bitch.

ReplyDeleteI have worked on John + Pearl for 5+ years now. Glad to see the NYU students go. Sick of seeing them late at night, acting stupid while wandering around Fulton St in their pajamas.

ReplyDeleteI saw a few units over the weekend. They wanted about $2400 for studios. The space was fairly large, but we would have had to put up those irritating fake walls so ubiquitous in Manhattan in order to make bedrooms. F that. They were completely lacking any personality and were bare rectangles. The units weren't even being completely renovated and the students had done a good job of tearing them up.
