Updated! Mysterious, low-flying helicopter returns...

I moved this post up top from yesterday afternoon... getting more reports that the thing is back hovering over the neighborhood this afternoon...

Circling now for like 20-30 minutes. Doesn't look like a police helicopter. I followed it to Avenue C after seeing it fly over Tompkins Square Park...

Previously.

  7. It was back this morning... I heard it around 6:30... A little later, when I went out, it seemed to be staying above 10th Street, going to and from First Avenue and Avenue D and back...

  8. I heard it too. Sounds liek it was right outside my window at 11:30. Creepy...

  9. seriously, what could be going on? i heard and saw the helicopter last night for at least a half hour around 10:30pm and now again at 11am?

  10. I didn't hear it last night.

I followed the helicopter yesterday afternoon as it hovered. Didn't look like a police helicopter. I even saw two police officers staring up it as well. They sort of shrugged and got into their car....

I'm open to theories. When I saw that it didn't look like any "official" type helicopter, I figured it was related — possibly — to a film shoot. Or maybe Spike Lee/DeNiro's people were scouting locations for "Alphaville." Though this seems unlikely given last night's events (flying low, seemingly snooping around...)

  11. Saturday, there was a film crew from 48 Hours set up on 5th St to film the precinct. I don't know if this could be part of that...a helicopter seems pretty elaborate.

  12. Seems as if that helicopter flew around for 48 hours...

  13. I heard it last week and last night too. 10ish last night. I'm on 2nd & B. creepy. I tried to google it, but nothing came up. They need to let us know. I thought we were under attack!

  15. has anyone thought to call 911? i called 311 last night but didn't follow through. i felt stupid. AND i think it's still flying around (4pm). so LOUD!

  16. What would be scary is if you saw it but couldn't hear it. I'm sure it's just Hollywood doing their thing. At least they aren't making Ave. B rain for 30 minutes

  17. The bad thing, Alpahbet City Soup, is that I keep THINKING that I hear it. I'm pretty sure I did around 6 p.m.

And you're buying the Hollywood theory?

  18. maybe if we send up a distress signal or signal fire the chopper will land. start burning garbage...

  19. I think it's for movies or TV. You know how all those overhead shots now all look like Googlemaps? Well I think that someone realizes they can't keep using it over and over.

  20. Hey Guys. Not sure if this was a related incident, BUT I noticed in current issue of New York Mag, in the section where that have that little map of what's going on in the boroughs, that there was a note about a low flying helicopter in Chelsea. The note also explained that the residences were alerted that there would be a low flying helicopter last Thursday at 4pm for a movie shoot. So perhaps they also came to our side of the island and we didn't get a thoughtful warning?

  21. Hi Krista,

Thanks for the information! Sounds like a good possibility... Perhaps the west side wasn't realistic enough for them!

By the way, I saw a helicopter hovering again this evening around 6... seemed to be circling below 7th Street...between A and C, roughly.

  23. This morning, from around 6:10 am. It's now 6:54 am and it's still hovering. It's so loud! I got out of bed and turned on the news to see if anything was being reported. But no, nothing. This happened another morning this week too, same time...??

  24. Well, I just googled "low flying helicopters circling neighborhoods" because we have been seeing the same thing here in the Chicago, IL. area for over 1 month now. One time couple weeks ago, I was able to get my binoculars on it. Blue & white, camera on the front..... No police or TV station markings though......
Circles for about 15-20 minutes, then leaves. No rhyme or reason. Sometimes broad daylight, just now, 11:30 pm. CDT. WEIRD is right.........
