Eyewitness: Shots fired on Avenue B and Second Street

From a reader:

Something big went down on avenue B around 5:15 this afternoon. i was walking down houston when at least a dozen cop cars and a few ambulances zoomed past and went up B. i overheard one guy saying shots had been fired. i lurked for a few minutes and saw the cops kind of fan out around the area of B and and 2nd street. overheard some other store owners and passersby that the shooter was "on the loose." decided to hightail it out of there and a few minutes later saw 2 helicopters hovering over the neighborhood. Sorry i don't have more details but it seemed quite serious.

  1. Wow, I had just picked up a young girl I was tutoring from after school on 6th and B and she pointed out the helicopters and I told them they were traffic reporters. Wishful thinking, I guess. We luckily walked uptown.

  3. Geez. I was walking right by there, too. Avenue B, between 2nd and 6th, let's say, has seemed a bit rough lately, no?

I got a weird feeling last time I walked down the street late at night -- something I hadn't had in a long time around these parts.

  4. Seems like some of the drug trade that was going doing on D has moved over to B. Dunno why. However, I'd bet the kids I saw running baggies from the clubs on B back and forth toward C the other night were same kids who were doing that on D. It's interesting that so many lights are off on that stretch of B. Also note that the part of fifth street that ends behind the school has been rather busy recently. Again, I'm not quite sure how it works. You don't drive your car up the dead end to buy drugs but, from what I can tell, various runners use fifth street to deliver product to people sitting in cars parked between A and B. I assume they are bringing stuff Ave. D.

Perhaps the enterprising new NYU/NYT news site focused on the EV can send a student out to buy drugs at the clubs and figure it out from there? Nah. Maybe the cops will figure it out? Nah. I think they already know how it works. As long as the customers aren't too unruly, everyone seems okay with it. Sigh.

  5. The yunnie yuppie types are back with bad attitude and a vengance--don't pick on the ghetto--the inconsiderate fraudsters are at it again--pushing into and bumping people out of the way because they are entitled. Fuck them.

  6. not sure if it was related by when i was walking from essex st to avenue a, about 5:45p on monday, there were two ambulances and three cops cars + a tv crew at A & first st, by nice guy eddies, which was closed all night. Never really paid attention if they were closed on mondays usually, but it seemed like unusual circumstances.

  11. Shooting on Avenue B and 2nd Street? Wow that is right by the Dolphin gym I used to go to before they closed it because of a dispute Dolphin Fitness had with the landlord.

  16. You people are idiots? The drug trade -- and the gangsters that go with it -- are a good thing? Walk down Avenue B late at night and get called "faggot" about 30 percent of the time and see how much you wax philosophical for the gangsters and how the yuppie whites are taking over. Please. Don't glamorize the ghetto. Or gangs. Or drugs. Or violence.
