Mikey's Pet Shop for rent

Last fall, we covered the saga of Mikey's Pet Shop on Seventh Street near Avenue A... the shop eventually closed...

At the time, some readers and Mikey's patrons passed along several tidbits....one reader said that she was told a nail salon is already in place to take over the store... and that Mikey's had to close because the landlord was reportedly raising the rent to $20,000 a month.

A "for rent" sign is now out front....

According to the listing:

Approx 600 SF

$4,500/month

Available Immediately

Available for any use as per Zoning

So no nail salon — yet. It will cost a bundle to turn this place into any kind of eatery...but that's my guess now...something to complement Butter Lane, Porchetta and The Bourgeois Pig on this stretch of Seventh Street between First Avenue and Avenue A....

Previously on EV Grieve:
Mikey's Pet Shop closing at the end of the month

  2. it's too bad that a rapidly growing segment of our neighborhood is on the way out. old timers. with commercial rents escalating by thousands of dollars (and apartments following along in their wake) there will be nothing left but high rent chains and fancy stores. most new, almost reasonably priced establishments, are so tiny because of the high rents.
this once interesting neighborhood is losing its charm.
when i moved here there were no "real" restaurants till a BYOB sea-food place opened (later to be replaced by telephone, now also gone). we had places like bini bon, and ukrainian & polish places.
only those old time businesses lucky enough to own their building will be left.

  3. Pardon my math, but that listing says $4.5k per month, not the $20K first quoted as the proposed increase.

    So what's really going on?

    Totes confused.

  4. I'm with you, VH.... Folks at Mikey's last fall told a reader the rent was going up to $20k.... maybe this was a landlord scare tactic or some saber rattling... Mikey's probably couldn't afford the $4,500 either...

  5. hi - i'm the reader that got told $20K, but the guy who worked in mikey's and said that he lived there (back of store? upstairs?) by that time pretty boy (the longtime store kitty) had died and i hadn't seen the mother-daughter team that worked there for quite some time either. not sure if he was exaggerating or being liked to...

anyway, i went by the other day, and the big mosacic'd planter that had pretty boy's memorial is gone, replaced by a newer planter with some nice flowers in it. pretty sure the original mosaic'd planter was a jim power's special.

yeah... neighborhoods always change, but the rate of change of the e.v. in the last 5-8 years has been supersonic and leave me feeling completely disconnected and disenfranchised in a place i've lived for 20+ years, and visiting even longer. its a really weird, sad feeling.
