The tag kind of sucks actually. Why is it that in public opinion Fairey the hipster idol is now a sell out? He's making money, something hipsters should consider doing. But then his work is watered down, too clean, and lacking any edge it once had. Just because he obsessively plastered cities with Obey posters doesn't mean he made a statement about anything by doing it. Thus the mural and the tag suck equally. Go deface something and shop at target.
Saw this yesterday driving by in a taxi. LOVE it. It's more organic IMHO.
It's public space. Unless you enclose it with velvet ropes it's going to get tagged. I like his work, but I am going to say it again: Fucking up other peoples property is the cornerstone of his career.
the tag over the Fairey piece makes it much better. the overlay is a good contrast to what is otherwise a slick madison avenue design/look for what could be a lame-hip ad campaign for some jean company. ultimately corporate shit masquerading as soviet agit-prop.

ReplyDeleteIt's more interesting than the mural.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering when this was finally gonna happen. Fairey totally deserves it. Bring back murals made by REAL artists!
ReplyDeleteIt's on! Kind of reminds me of when Fairey first started to make a name for himself with the defacing a mayoral campaign billboard in Providence. He was an underdog then. Now he's someone to take out.
ReplyDeleteI like the tags way better.....

whats especially amazing about the Obey Cianci billboard is that Cianci was notoriously corrupt, nice foresight
ReplyDeletewow. now that's the way you do it. how soon before the Deitch people come out to fix it yet again? isn't it time to let the city do its thing?
ReplyDeleteAwesome.

awwww did Shepard Fairey's TM advert get a little smudged with some authentic dirt?
ReplyDeleteWhat a loss to the world as those print outs dont grow on trees...
Wild nice.
ReplyDeleteSo now that Banksy has put up the "peace" piece, all the bombers will respect that and won't diss the Shep Fairey mural? EV, what do you think?
