As a tribute to a lost and vanishing part of the city ... I revisited a post of mine from November 2008 ... Here's Donohue's Steak House, 845 Lexington Ave. near 64th Street, which opened in 1950... an-all-too-rare classic that's still open....

ReplyDeleteI hope and believe these great "retired" blogs will live on with the news and photos they delivered. I like to read them as I would pick up a book (yes a book)these blogs NMNL and Lost City are valid and vital--that is why they are important. They show a cultural main stream on days gone by and tribal awareness we gather from street life.

ReplyDeleteas i recall, this blog was about to grieve the almost closing of mona's and sophie's (thank g_d, they're still around).
but like what bob said, with "...the new profusion of bloggers (esp tumblrers in the ev), cellphone photographers..." and the proliferation of nyu kids in the ev, sites like yours, jvny, bb lost city and neither more nor less are being overshadowed by these who probably don't even know what is disappearing and being lost.
i think the day that nyu/nyt "hyper-local" blog becomes the go-to site for the evillagers would be the day to hang-it up also.
in the meantime, i need to "copy" contents from this site into my tumblog.
I dunno, Esquared... I guess I didn't mean to make it about me ... it was a salute to Lost City.... I always take things day to day with the site... I never thought long term... And reading Brooks' farewell made me think about what EVG will be in another year or two...
