I remember walking in East Village institution DeRobertis here on First Avenue a few years ago... it was a Sunday afternoon... and it was the first time that I noticed the 100-year-old-plus bakery-cafe had a few flat-screen TVs installed.... One of the women working there was really into the Jets game.
...nothing wrong with that, I suppose ... just seemed like a funny place to watch an NFL game... But, every so often during a big sporting event, I'll walk in here to catch a glimpse of the game....
...and maybe use the restroom...
I love this place.
Grieve--thanks for all the updates!!DeRobertis Bakery is great--I love the old timey feel and love their biscottis dipped in dark chocolate. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteThose flatscreens ain't just there for you to keep track of the game buddy, nowhaddimean ?
ReplyDeleteSo much better than that overly gooped up tourist trap around the corner. Altho I could do without the TVs, I'll put up with 'em just to snarf down a Cassetina Siciliana (aka the "breast pastry", cos that's what it looks like). Yum!
ReplyDeleteI used to go in on a Friday evening to have coffee, lemon sorbet and listen to the violinist. I can't think of another place like it.
ReplyDeleteDo not diss Veniero's, Lisa! Yes, the tourists love it, but that doesn't inherently make it teh suck. The ricotta cheesecake is the bomb and the place is true blue East Village; the owners are big supporters of the Remember the Triangle Fire Association (one of the victims of the 1911 fire lived upstairs -- the current owner remembers his great-uncle talking about her death). And the regular cheesecake and the pignoli cookies are also unsucky.
ReplyDeleteDe Robertis is splendid. I just wish they had their lemon ice and chocolate ice going all year. I keep asking, and they just laugh. What! You eat ice cream all year round, right? Why not Italian ices??
