All the people that ran away from the LES, "it sucks, it sold out, it's gentrified" blah blah, of course, they are right, and I agree to a great extent.
ReplyDeleteBut then there's this. It's just a wall mural, but to me, and to many, it's a connection to the 80's art scene, a time when NYC and the LES were second to none. I'm really missing Keith and Jean-Michel right at this moment.
I guess maybe I'm just a nostolgic fool, but this mural has really made me happy. It's so anti-capitalism, so anti-commercialism, etc. It says "freedom" to me... "bend your own way, be your own person" as opposed to the cookie cutter kids of today, who all look exactly the same.
And there it is, up on the wall, the first major art piece that I know I will say, 10 years from now: "Oh that? I was there, I saw that, you missed it..." instead of hearing it all the time myself!

ReplyDeleteI walked past it around 6:45 last night on my way home. I had to smile to myself because I felt, as a follower of this blog, that I was in on a little secret. For example, I am one of a lucky few who knows who the artist is, why the painting is there, and saw its progression in photos. I love this blog!
ReplyDeleteSeeing the finished product is more impressive than I thought it'd be. It really is a stunner and I hope it stays up a while and the taggers pay it some respect and don't sully it. There are plenty of nearby walls for them to leave their mark.

ReplyDeleteI never hoyd of this Kenny Scharf, and I'm not really into visual art, but I'm impressed with his artistry. This really puts the previous mural to shame. It is colorful, imaginative and inventive. The old one was pointless, self-serving, crude, ham-fisted and flat-out depressing. To call it art is a stretch.
