Superdive was on last night's CB3/SLA agenda... Team Dive was a no show at the January CB3/SLA meeting, though they claim they never filed the paperwork to be on the docket...
So, prior to last night's meeting, I asked the Divers via e-mail if they'd attend the meeting. Short answer: No. (And, true to that, they were not there.)
Long answer:
"Susan Stetzer took it upon herself ... to put superdive on the agenda for the renewal. which does happen until the end of april and we are not required to notify until march but alas
let the facts be clear:
since 1/24/10 there have been no incidents, complaints about or violations issued at 200 avenue A.
superdive — superclean for over a year!
we would love to attend this hatchet trial but alas in no way would poppadive not be with mommadive on valentine's day.
and one day a real rain will come, an people's uprising, and swept away in the tidal wave of history will be the despotic demonic tyrannical "community" board.
WHO NEEDS DEMOCRACY WHEN YOU HAVE SUPERDIVE?
LONG LIVE SUPERDIVE
RETURNING SPRING 2011
A TRUE SHIT HOLE. With shit hole games.
ReplyDeleteThis weirdness about how they shouldn't be on the docket is negated by the fact that they are on Wednesday's (tomorrow) State SLA hearing agenda in Harlem. The Community Board has to meet prior to the SLA meeting in order to send over their recommendations. If they had waited until next month to do it, it would have been too late for the SLA hearing.
ReplyDeleteNote: if you feel inspired, the public is welcome to SLA hearings, and while I have never attended one, it might prove to be an interesting civics lesson. Alas, it is during the day while those industrious of us are toiling away.
It's just so sad at this point. Like how they can't simply say they'll be returning, they have to announce an ALL CAPS TRIUMPHANT RETURN, which is only made more pathetic because everyone knows the place is a complete and dismal failure.
ReplyDeleteYou had your ten minutes in the sun, Superdive. Know when to fold 'em. No one even cares anymore and the EV have bigger douchebars to fry now.
The funny thing about this whole controversy about Super Dive is that they were never that popular to begin with. The whole idea that they were some super popular party house that was bursting that at the seams is a myth of their own making. I worked nights in that neighborhood on Saturdays and I can tell you Super Dive was never very croweded, often it was closed for "private events", and that there were never patron in the bar after 4 like many of the other bars in that bermuda triangle.
ReplyDeleteI think the owners of Super Dive were hoisted on their own petard because they became a symbol of the bars we all hate, full of Murray Hill residents trying to relive their days at Colgate. The place was really much more mild in reality.
Mark sanchez's girl says she loves this place
ReplyDelete@Grieve
ReplyDeleteWhy do you keep posting their sarcastic remarks denouncing the community board/residents? It seems to me like you've struck up a friendly repore with the owners and have replaced your formerly biting commentary with neutral headlines and repost their spin on things.
How is "threatening to return" neutral?
ReplyDeleteAnd I find reposting their spin telling.
@Anon 12:12, their comments about the community board aren't completely off base. The decisions made by the board are often capricious and completely arbitrary. I've said this before but the fact they denied Sasha Petraske at Mercury Dime killed that place and anyone that knows Sasha's other places no there are never any noise or any other problems for the neighborhood but the board has no problem giving approval to the 13th Step that has a reputation of running frat holes.
ReplyDeleteI like that they are touting that there haven't been any incidents while their bar has been closed. Good work, Superdive, let's keep it that way. You being closed, I mean.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous 1:06pm: I thought the same thing! How much trouble could happen when the place is empty! And the last three lines of their statement bring new meaning to capital punishment.
ReplyDeleteI live across the street from Superdive and made 23 documented 311 complaint calls while they were open- the last four made after 1-24-10. I could have made twice as many, but only had so much time and energy. They often had groups of ten to twenty lined up to get in and did a very poor job of managing the noise. My last complaint was in April of 2010. By then 9th Precinct was on their case as well and by July they were only open one or two nights a week. That's why the complaints dwindled.
ReplyDeletemy my my. struck a nerve i see. well, based on the attendance at last night's meeting superdive is for lovers, and not haters. glad to see those hater folks had nothing to do on the lovers holiday. you did give me an idea though, we'll rename it PERV and make it an adult bookstore/video shop with the worlds largest indoor porn screen, a vast selection of the perviest written and filmed pornography and a wide selection of new and used sex paraphenalia. now there's a friendly neighborhood bookstore.
ReplyDeletewith love,
POPPADIVE
Just to clarify my earlier comment, they are on the SLA agenda tomorrow regarding infractions and fines, not about the renewal of their license, so I withdraw my statement herein and hence.
ReplyDelete@Jill
ReplyDeleteAs long as you're henced about it.
@Anon 2:22, I'm not saying Super Dive was a good neighbor, I'm just saying, in my experience, there are bars that are the same if not worse but their names aren't brought up nearly as often because they don't go out of their way to stick out. For example, take Allan's post right below yours. I completely believe that this is Allan from Super Dive and instead of trying to soothe things over he goes out of his way to be a douche bag.
ReplyDelete@Allan, it must have killed you that you couldn't make a bar work on A. There are easily another 12 bars within a block of you and they are all making money. And as to your assertion that Super Dive is for lovers and not haters, you should look at your Yelp listing. It seems like a large number of visitors to your bar are haters as well. They hated your bar.
Actually, Allan owns/operates a whole bunch of bars including Drop Off Service right across the street on A.
ReplyDeleteAllan, 9:40 here. You didn't strike a nerve. I'm just so very tired of hearing about your depressing little failure of a drunk tank/eyesore. And I would love a porn bookstore across the street. A least a bookstore is something that space is legally licenced to operate.
ReplyDeleteAlso: "POPPADIVE"? Seriously? Well fine, but please just don't inflict any DIVESPAWN on the EV. We have enough wasted kids here already.
EV Grieve...keeping Superdive Alive since 2010
ReplyDeleteIt's New York City, it's the East Village. East Village has always been loud, just with a different crowd making the noise (many of you older commenters were the ones making noise not so long ago). If you want a quiet neighbordhood the EV has never been the place. Move to the Upper East Side if you want peace and quiet. If you want vibrance and youth, stay in the East Village, that is what it's always been about. STOP COMPLAINING!
ReplyDeleteAh, a classic post from Anon 10:21. You do realize we've all heard, and refuted, the argument of "the EV has always been noisy; if you don't like it, move" about a billion times already. (You've also clearly never spent much time on York Ave or the 86th St vicinity on the UES, but that is their noisewar to defend.)
ReplyDeleteYou're just another chump who has been here ten whole minutes but insists on telling the rest of us "the way it is." Please sit down and kindly shut up.
