Work continues at 54 Second Ave. at Third Street, home of the beloved "Crazy Landlord" sign.
Despite some rumors ("garment store with sex toys"!), the storefront will be home to the new East Village location of The Bean, currently housed on First Avenue and Third Street... just a block away. Permits with the DOB confirm the new tenant.
While walking by yesterday, EV Grieve regular jdx noted a new name on the buzzer...
We don't have all the details on the move to Second Avenue. The Crazy Landlord did confirm the new tenant. We'll have more later...
Meanwhile, the Bean is finalizing their plans to open an outpost on 12th and Broadway as well.

New York State seizes The Bean on First Avenue!
[Updated] Out-of-control cab kills one, injuries six on First Avenue and Third Street
Did the Bean reopen too soon?
That's actually a great spot for a cafe. Plenty o sidewalk.
ReplyDeleteI don't like 2nd Ave until after that subway gets finished. It's a business killer when they're outside blasting away .
ReplyDeleteWas hoping for something a little more interesting than The Bean to open up there, but I'll take anything over nothing. Been an empty spot for too long.
ReplyDeleteGood to see the building is getting a little work done on it now as well, needed some a clean up.
Wow, that's great news! Aren't they also opening an outpost on Broadway and 12th? Glad they're doing so well.
ReplyDeleteI hope they keep the rent-a-computer at the new spots, they are so useful to those of us who don't need 24/7 internet access. Their big challenge will be maintaining quality employees. Unlike think, they aren't so pretentious. They should ban NYU students, those 'people' take up the spaces for hours. They have 100 lounges and study spaces and libraries but they have to hog the few spaces open to the public.
ReplyDeleteWill they keep the location on 1st Avenue as well?

ReplyDeleteHaven't heard yet officially... unofficially, it seems unlikely that they'd keep both.
The Bean at 49 1/2 is one of the 17 buildings bought by Westbrook Associates and managed by Magnum, aka- Ben Shaoul, developer of The A Building and Sky East. 165 Avenue A also happens to be a Westbrook/Magnum, aka Ben Shaoul location. It's a neighborhood killer when predatory landlords and business owners help to drive out tenants and destroy people's quality of life through inch by inch construction in colaboration with the people who have and continue to destroy our neighborhood.
