Here come the lines. Japadog, the crazy popular Vancouver-based artisanal hot dog stands, is opening its first brick-and-mortar (whatever) shop on 30 St. Mark's Place.
Oh my. This will get really delirious.
Jeremiah Moss first brought us the possibility of a Japadog invasion back in March 2010.
Per Jeremiah:
Knowing New York's current passion for (1) standing in line for trendy food, (2) all things Japanese, (3) adorable, artisanal sidewalk food vendors, and (4) cheap, white-trash food turned into semi-haute cuisine (burgers, cupcakes, bacon, pizza, et al.), I predict that Japadog will be immensely successful here.
He goes on.
[W]hen the now bigger, much more powerful Japadog announces plans for a three-story, outdoor, hot-dog and beer pleasure palace to be erected on a quiet street in "Nolita," the community will rally against them, successfully blocking construction.

I'll stick to my Fortress of Solitude at the Papaya Dog in Penn Station. You can get a giant beer and a hot dog for under five bucks. And the people watching there is great. Especially in the early morning hours.
ReplyDeleteta-da!
ReplyDeleteit was inevitable.
Cool!!! We don't have any Japanese food vendors on St Marks Place, finally some authentic Japanese food.

those signs are covering up some great graffiti.
ReplyDelete@Jeremiah
ReplyDeleteYes. I think I have some photos of it somewhere...
the ev is playing like a greek tragedy, and jm is our oracle.
ReplyDeletealso, as usual, expect them to apply for a liquor license, for an alcohol-infused japadog, and to pair those 'dogs with sapporo, artisanal sake, plum and rice wine, yadi, yadi, yada...
giving asiadog on kenmare street a run for its money. i haven't ate at either place.
ReplyDeleteI was very sorry to see that "Go" restaurant closed. ("Go" was the relatively inexpensive Japanese restaurant that was in that space for more than 20 years.)
ReplyDeleteMmmmm...rum ham
ReplyDelete@Marty - Just an fyi...the Papaya Dog at 14th & 1st is typically 20% less expensive than other Papaya Dogs. But it doesn't serve beer.
ReplyDeleteI have been to japadog in Canada and it's not meant to be fancy or 'haute cuisine.' It's a combination of the most gut busting cheap japanese street food and our beloved tube streak. I can't think of a more fitting food for St. Marks place and I will go there often and try them all.
ReplyDeleteI worry about encroachment just as much as the next guy, but this I'm looking forward to. I guess not everyone around here is ok with the Japanese, but this area is actually a nice little enclave for the ex-pats and a haven for anyone who loves Japanese foods. I'm gonna try the Oroshi, Okonomiyaki and the Terimayo.
ReplyDeleteJeremiah & Grieve,
ReplyDeleteI have photos of the graffiti too. If you want them, let me know.
pretty sure there won;t be any big yuppie lines for this. you;re misreading it.
ReplyDeleteAt $3.50 for a regular hot dog ($5+ for others), I also wonder if there will be lines. I'm not begrudging Japadog's prices at all. Just acknowledging the nearby, incredibly stiff competition presented by 2 Bros' $1 pizza slices and Cheep's $2 giant falafels.
ReplyDelete@Tom @4:25PM: Thanks for the Papaya tip, I like the Papaya @14th and 1st and go there occasionally, but as you said, it doesn't have beer.
ReplyDeleteMmmmm...rum ham... paid for by the trust fund courtesy of mommy and daddy. More alcohol to soak up the previous or forthcoming consumption of alcohol. WOOOOOOOOOOOO!
