There is a drawer in our apartment full of menus. Hundreds. It's absurd, because we always end up ordering from Odessa.
So I cleaned out the drawer because: a) it wouldn't close and b) we're going to rent it out. The space will fit a small futon and maybe something else pliable from IKEA. No Pets. No brokers please. $1,350 a month. Perfect for students on a budget, models from Europe and people who like sleeping in drawers. Must like menus.
As for the menus... nothing too old... but it is a snapshot of how quickly some places come and go...
My God. I think I wept a little when I saw Bamboo House. You are missed!
ReplyDeleteOh! I miss the pizza shop! Well, my kid does more than me. But that was a good slice! What ever happened to them? Weren't they gonna open something else?
ReplyDeletekurve had take-out?
ReplyDeleteoctavia's porch having had take-out must have been their idea of farm to table
i miss burritoville, all that all you can eat chips and salsa, and all the different type of sauces. and no security guards! chipotle pales in comparison (the one on 14th st. near irving place has a security guard and still don't know why they are almost always packed and have a line). to each his own, i suppose. i digress.

I too grieve for the loss of Burritoville. :*-(
ReplyDeletelucky dog on first ave (10-11) was pretty swell, blue plate specials and bad staff.
ReplyDeletethey were special, mostly comfortable, pretty good food, and mostly not expensive except for a few "gourmet" items.
Where's your IHOP menu?
ReplyDelete@Marty
ReplyDeleteHa! I actually have one!
"must like menus." LOL!
ReplyDeleteHoly shit what a fantastic idea. I know what I'm doing this weekend!
ReplyDeleteMemorabilia!! OMG.
ReplyDeleteI went all digital (menupages) a while ago but seeing all the menus harkens back to a simpler time. When places listed their phone no. with no area code. That is seriously old-school.
ReplyDeleteBurritoville dine-in free chips and salsa!
ReplyDeletedamn even in this "digital age" i think that coast to coast the majority have a "menu drawer"...i think i have two...not a city person but they seem to come and go everywhere...
ReplyDeleterr
we have a thick purple binder full of take-out menus, with a special front pocket full of the usual suspects -- oh, we hearken back to the days before online menus and sigh.
ReplyDeleteI prefer to think of it as douching out the old menu drawer. I mean douche or douchebag has become such a favorite catch-all term to describe a myriad of societal ills, and also since actual vaginal douching has gone the way of the dodo it would be a shame if the word douche were to complete lose its original meaning.
ReplyDeleteTerrible comment, I know. sorry.
Bamboo House! I got the neon sign from it when it closed - they were cleaning out the wreckage and I asked if I could have it. I couldn't believe it when they said yes! The transformer weighs, like, 50 tons and the cord is about 2 inches long, but I heart it. My neighbors might feel a bit differently though.....;D

ReplyDeleteDang! Nicely done. Your neighbors certainly understand.
I laughed out loud when I read
ReplyDelete"...because we always end up ordering from Odessa."
Could not agree more!
How did I end up back in 2011??!?? Kinda nice here....
ReplyDeleteIt was a simpler, COVID-free time when good takeout abounded, fellow April 2020er.
