The rumor was that the replacement tree would be a memorial for the late Steve Jobs.
Yesterday afternoon, workers from Bette Midler's New York Restoration Project planted this Dawn Redwood tree... A worker told EV Grieve reader peter radley that, yes — this tree will be dedicated to Steve Jobs... (We also reached out to the NY Restoration Project for comment...)
We're not sure about any kind of permanent plaque ... Bobby Williams was also on the scene...

I like this. The Macintosh empowered creative people and gave expression, connection, and life to an entire community that woud otherwise have been ignored by the big computer and software companies. For this we can thank Steve Jobs, and planting a beautiful redwood tree in our park, (that has lost too many trees this year) seems humble and appropriate. An apple tree would have been crass. ;-)

ReplyDeleteI think it's a good idea and agree with Thomas! He did a lot for creative people over the past decades, and introduced people who would never know, and might still not, to simple Design and Art. I think its fitting.

I just think it's really funny that we're experiencing a huge period of upheaval and vitriol towards corporations and their executives, yet those very same people gush over Steve Jobs and Apple. They either don't know, or just conveniently choose to look over, the fact that he was a capitalist of the first order; whose innovations were intended more to bolster the bottom line of his company rather than "empower" creative-types. Which is exactly what he, as a chief executive officer of a company, should do. But planting trees in his honor in a place he had absolutely no connection to whatsoever is ridiculous.

Following up on what I've said before, and in response to Anon 2:49 : What "good deeds" has Steve Jobs done? He sold products. By your logic, I believe we should plant trees for every other CEO out there. Steve Jobs as a man was no different from his peers - no better, no worse - he just came up with a product that brought about large changes in his industry. Want to plant trees for industrialists who've effected real change in society? Plant them for Henry Ford. Andrew Carnegie. John Jacob Astor. The list goes on...

@peter r - I've been trying to find out about this, but it's not as easy as it seems. I've read in several places that trees can be anywhere from $250 to $2500 and I can't seem to find out how to donate to a specific park. If no one else knows, it's probably easiest to ask a park employee.

ReplyDeleteI found out today that you can dedicate a tree that is already in the park. I am not sure yet how this works, but you make a donation and a tree gets to be dedicated to ... In this case Bob A. I will call then tomorrow and see, the #212 353 9063. There is even a plaque on the wall of the office building with the names of people who have trees given over to them and a map of how to find them. It maybe less expensive?
