Behold the Steve Jobs memorial tree in Tompkins Square Park

Well, it turns out that the rumors are true... last week, workers removed the stump from the Irene-damaged tree in Tompkins Square Park.

The rumor was that the replacement tree would be a memorial for the late Steve Jobs.

Yesterday afternoon, workers from Bette Midler's New York Restoration Project planted this Dawn Redwood tree... A worker told EV Grieve reader peter radley that, yes — this tree will be dedicated to Steve Jobs... (We also reached out to the NY Restoration Project for comment...)

[peter radley]

We're not sure about any kind of permanent plaque ... Bobby Williams was also on the scene...

RUMORS: Memorial tree for Steve Jobs planned for Tompkins Square Park

  1. I like this. The Macintosh empowered creative people and gave expression, connection, and life to an entire community that woud otherwise have been ignored by the big computer and software companies. For this we can thank Steve Jobs, and planting a beautiful redwood tree in our park, (that has lost too many trees this year) seems humble and appropriate. An apple tree would have been crass. ;-)

  2. Who the fuck 'authorized' a tree for steve jobs. what the fuck did he do for the East Village that would warrant a tree. - oh wait, under fascism we glorify the corporate heads.

  3. I think it's a good idea and agree with Thomas! He did a lot for creative people over the past decades, and introduced people who would never know, and might still not, to simple Design and Art. I think its fitting.

  4. Are you fucking kidding me??? Steve Jobs????? Retarded.
    Who gets to decide that?

  5. i like crusty meadow..a new tree is fine for all not just steve jobs who never gave any money to charity. The tree should be planted for the unsung heroes of the hood.

  6. How is Steve Jobs connected to the East Village? Seriously. I want to know.

How about we dedicate the tree to Bob Arihood instead?

  7. I just think it's really funny that we're experiencing a huge period of upheaval and vitriol towards corporations and their executives, yet those very same people gush over Steve Jobs and Apple. They either don't know, or just conveniently choose to look over, the fact that he was a capitalist of the first order; whose innovations were intended more to bolster the bottom line of his company rather than "empower" creative-types. Which is exactly what he, as a chief executive officer of a company, should do. But planting trees in his honor in a place he had absolutely no connection to whatsoever is ridiculous.

  8. A tree for Steve Jobs is only fine if a tree for Bob Arihood also gets planted!

  9. I agree with the Bob Arihood tribute tree instead! Bob documented the EV, not Steve Jobs.

  11. Bob Bob Bob Bob, Bob Arihood. There’s a Beach Boys segue somewhere in my pitiful song reference but yes, Bob over Steve any day.

  12. This just isn't right. Bob Arihood, yes. We've actually lost several community members this last year who deserve to be remembered with trees.

  13. i agree with most... what's the EV connection? it sets a bad precedent. hell, next thing you know we'll be planting trees for buckwheat.

  14. Following up on what I've said before, and in response to Anon 2:49 : What "good deeds" has Steve Jobs done? He sold products. By your logic, I believe we should plant trees for every other CEO out there. Steve Jobs as a man was no different from his peers - no better, no worse - he just came up with a product that brought about large changes in his industry. Want to plant trees for industrialists who've effected real change in society? Plant them for Henry Ford. Andrew Carnegie. John Jacob Astor. The list goes on...

  15. Yes, the corporate side has spoken. The side with no heart, no empathy, no soul. “Dead”.

Anony 2.49PM-I tripped with Steve Jobs, I knew Steve Jobs, Steve Jobs was a friend of mine. Anony 2.49PM , you're no Steve Jobs.

  16. Does anyone want to put their money where there mouths are? Why not start a fund for a tree for Bob A.
I think that the Parks people will accept donations for
a tree, easy to find out. No point being angry at this tree. Bob, was a friend of mine and I will give a donation. But, not with anger. There is just too much anger already. ... Is anybody interested in this?

  17. nope - these people are not "do-ers" they are whiners. they are only happy when they can sit in self-satisfied judgement of the accomplishments of others. a fucking tree is donated and planted in our park in the name of a guy who achieved and accomplished and DID SHIT, and they cannot help themselves but to piss on the gesture because no one asked their permission first! worse than republicans these useless negative navel-gazers!...

  18. Hmmm..."a guy who did shit?" Do you mean the guy who did shit by using Chinese slave labor? Or that guy who belittled and treated others cruelly? Or maybe the guy whole stole ideas from others and then went ape shit when others stole his stolen ideas? Maybe it was the guy who was worth $8 billion and when asked by other rich people to help save lives with his fortune like them, ignored them? Yeah, that guy. The guy who did shit.

  20. @peter r - I've been trying to find out about this, but it's not as easy as it seems. I've read in several places that trees can be anywhere from $250 to $2500 and I can't seem to find out how to donate to a specific park. If no one else knows, it's probably easiest to ask a park employee.

  21. if you forget the tree will be dedicated to steve jobs, then it is just another tree in a park that has lost many trees recently.
worst case there will be an ugly plaque on the tree. best case just an apple with a bite out of it.
    long live trees.
a tree is a tree is a tree.

  22. Goglla et all,
I found out today that you can dedicate a tree that is already in the park. I am not sure yet how this works, but you make a donation and a tree gets to be dedicated to ... In this case Bob A. I will call then tomorrow and see, the #212 353 9063. There is even a plaque on the wall of the office building with the names of people who have trees given over to them and a map of how to find them. It maybe less expensive?
    We will see?
