Say goodBao to Tahini on Third Avenue and St. Mark's

So Eater had the scoop yesterday that Michael "Bao" Huynh is taking over the Tahini joint here ... and opening an "Old School Style Philly" cheesesteak place called — Mikey's Cheese Steak. He'll serve a Korean version, Mexican version and Italian version of the sandwich. He already owns Baoguette down St. Mark's Place next to the incoming 7-Eleven.

No word yet if he'll remove the "falafel" and "shawarma" painted on the front of the building.

  1. Too bad. I liked it when it first opened as Chickpea, but then the owners stopped caring and quality took a rapid dive.

    Thank God (Praise Allah) we still have Mamoun's. I could go for a Shwarma sandwich right now!

  2. Meh. I'm kinda indifference about tahini closing. They do serve some tasty falafel and shawarma but it's expensive compared to other places in the neighborhood.

    Of course, what's replacing it will not be any cheaper.

  3. How's this guy keep opening and closing all these places? Must be a headache.
    At least he's a real New Yorker, though seems to be a corny "poppin' bottles" type.

  4. Thank Yahweh. The owners of that place didn't know how to make that kind of food. Another fake Middle Eastern food place that rightfully bit the dust.

  7. So sad. Best falafel around I think... even over Mamouns. I have to disagree with the complaint about it being expensive... $4.85 for a huge falafel pita was about the best deal around (plus a 20% discount for students). RIP
