A memorial on Avenue B: 'I hope you will have a good time in heaven'

Several weeks ago, we spotted a notice about the passing of Elisa Martinez, a longtime resident at 28 Avenue B ...


Amazingly, given the weather, film shoots and hordes of nightlifers along this corridor, a memorial remains today outside the door to her building ... and her friends and loved ones have left several cards and letters in her honor ...


We did not know her. She obviously meant a lot to many people... Here's one from Chris and his family that starts "I hope you will have a good time in heaven ... ."

    Beautiful memorial. As we come into September I will also remember the first anniversary of Bob Arihood's untimely departure.

    These are the angels of our past and present. The people you could actually have a meaningful conversation with and whose lives have been changed by knowing them.

    I knew and adored Elisa (for more than 20 years) and her puppydog. I moved here on Avenue B as a kid, and Elisa was a steady presence in my life. Elisa was also an everyday presence around the 'hood, always smiling, chatting with folks. She loved to hang outside Ben's Deli, and could be heard in rapid-fire Spanish (a veces, Spanglish) debating whatever the current topic was. She was usually ready with a kind word and a smile, and was never too busy to tell me "I looked great."

    Her death was from a heart attack, and it came suddenly. She didn't suffer as far as I know. I heard her cousin or niece took the chihuahua, which is a relief. (He wasn't as friendly to others as he loved his momma best.) I know that's one thing that Elisa would have been worried about. She was rarely seen without her puppy companion.

    I miss Elisa and think about her often. The sun shines a bit dimmer, the world is a bit less friendly since she left it. And us.

    I hope you are enjoying heaven. Elisa! Puppies everywhere, coffee that's always hot, and plenty of LES'ers wandering around to keep you company. Until we meet again,
