The East Fifth St. Tree Committee back in action
A reader points out that new signs have appeared here on East Fifth Street between Second Avenue and Cooper Square... The post-Sandy grace period has evidently ended...

ReplyDeleteIt's my observation that the "bicycles will be removed" signs on this street are not securely attached to the rails. I don't own a bicycle and I don't live on this street so I don't have any skin in this game. However, I'm surprised that bike vigilantes have not tried to remove the signs in the middle of the night. I'm only slightly ashamed to admit that I'd like to see this conflict escalate.
ReplyDeleteI live on the block and have a bike locked up there (in good repair) - it would be great if the bikes that are abandoned are removed. It's so hard to park otherwise.
ReplyDeleteThis end of the block (east) has a ton of bikes, so there's an obvious need for more bike parking. Is there someone to contact about installing more racks or a dedicated bike parking area?

ReplyDeleteSadly, the delivery guys take up many of the rack spaces. Just look at the corner of Ave A and E. 11th; it's all Westville delivery bikes.
So on E. 6th last night at Josie's I could not find anywhere to lock my bike so I had to lock it to a tree fence. I felt bad.
I'm going to get in touch with Susan Stetzer and ask for CB3 to get the city to install several new bike racks.
Or does anyone have a better idea on how to get this done?
I went and looked up "dont roof rack me bro". For shame, Romney.

The city needs to approve of some sort of biker cabal that can legally remove abandoned bikes though an agreed upon process that offers the owner a good chance of getting their bike back if they want it. If anything they could at least know to remove it and maybe give the lock to someone who could use it.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone noticed the abandoned bikes taking up the two best bike parking places in front of the Morton Williams on Bleecker st? Who the hell would even buy a bike like that here? A beach cruiser for fucks sake! In New York! It's no wonder they left in front of the grocery store.
I've never seen anywhere as bad as East 5th though, it really is the perfect storm of delivery bikes from the restaurants on 2nd Ave and skeletonized crappy bikes that have clearly been used three times and left for six months!
I admit(since you cant see who I am) to locking my own bike to these fences a few times, there is simply nowhere else in the area! If anything the signs do keep the tree fences from becoming huge pyramids of various bike remains, so they probably do serve their purpose despite being obnoxious.
