Today, we're 5; TV Grieve exposed

Today marks the five-year anniversary of EV Grieve.

A couple of you may recall the humble beginnings here, when I was known as TV Grieve — a blog about television. And Tara Reid. Here's an early post...

But it was a crowded marketplace, so I rebranded and...

OK, I made that up.

Anyway, thank you for your support, comments, gripes, tips, photos, Lady Gaga jokes, camaraderie, passion — everything. Thank you.

Doing this every day, seven days a week, often swings from being completely exhilarating to utterly depressing. (And back!) I've thought about slowing down... gently bringing the site all to an end.

Funny, though. Maybe some time passes. And I'm in another part of NYC or out of town ... and I find myself taking pictures of plywood around storefronts and for lease signs on restaurants for absolutely no reason ... I can't really stop. And I really do love living here.

So ... we might be stuck with each other for awhile.

I hope so. I'm not going anywhere. I hope that you're not either.

  2. Happy Birthday, Grieve! Your voice is consistently funny, sarcastic, sad, ironic, and informative (and the sheer volume of quality content never ceases to amaze)!

(My brain skipped over the bringing the site all to an end part.)

  3. Time flys, eh? Happy 5th and many more! Can't imagine eating my morning cereal and not having a look at your latest updates.

  4. Congratulations! Developmental research promises us an exciting year together, considering that five-year-olds

    - are creative and enthusiastic problem solvers. They offer progressively more imaginative ideas for how to do a task, make something or solve longer-term or more abstract challenges. As they participate in a variety of new experiences, five-year-olds ask more analytical questions and weigh their choices. - are more social as they learn new things and prefer activities that involve other children.

    - have well developed language skills, can pronounce words clearly, speak in complex and compound sentences, use correct grammar for the most part and have good-sized vocabularies that continue to grow rapidly.

    - know their uppercase and most lowercase letters and understand that letters represent specific sounds in spoken words. They also can discuss stories and are able to tell their own tales.

    - sequence events chronologically and are learning to tell time. They can also sort objects based on more than one characteristic.

    - abound with energy...

If you want to know more about yourself, EV Grieve, reflect on http://www.pbs.org/parents/childdevelopmenttracker/five/index.html In the meantime just know that while the East Village family publicly loves all its offspring the same, we really deep down love you the most.

  5. THANK YOU for your service! your blog is indispensable. not only does it tell us what's going on in our nabe, but it helps keep the EV feeling like a community even as evil (and/or banal) forces try to make it less of one. happy blogaversary.

(and my brain skipped what pinhead's brain skipped.)

  7. Happy New Year (of EV Grieve)!
Thanks for taking all the scaps of plywood, etc., and preserving this part of EV history. Like Patti Smith said on closing night at CBGB's, "What we have left, is the future."

  12. Congrats on the five years and thank you so much for all the work you do with this blog. I'm sure there are lots of days where you don't feel like posting anything, but we all really appreciate the hard work you put in.

    Thanks!

  13. Grieve,

Please never stop! We love you, and my friends and I have turned you into a verb - "to grieve" - in relation to bitching about stuff, always your commenters, never your posts. I read this every day, and you do an amazing job! Totally an integral, important part of our neighborhood.

  20. Congrats on 5 years, Grieve. I completely understand wanting to end it all, but I hope you don't. Thanks for all you do.

  21. Thank you very much, everyone... I appreciate the kind words.

And this makes it all the more difficult to put up the paywall and start charging you...

    Haha. OLD joke...

  22. I echo pretty much everything already stated above, especially the impressiveness of the amount of (and the breadth of) information you disseminate. I often wonder how you do it all. You provide a great service to this neighborhood and in many ways help to KEEP it a neighborhood. Lastly, on your sarcasm; it is much appreciated and adds a nice touch (however the fact that you are hawking this whole 5th anniversary bit on the day the world was due to end makes it pretty obvious that you are planning to hit all of us up with some sort of “Grieve Access Tax” in the near future!)

  26. Thank You and congratulations on 5 years! Your blog kept us informed during Sandy when we were luckily out of town but worried about our friends and family in the neighborhood.

  27. Congratulations, Grieve. Since I found your blog in 2011 I've become a huge fan of your reporting. Although I'm not an EV resident (sorry, I'm an old boomer from Long Island) I'm intensely interested in many of the issues that dominate this site (not so much Tara Reid, though). Thanks for your great work. Take some time off to keep yourself fresh. Best wishes for another 5 years.

  28. Happy Birthday from Peoria, EV Grieve! Keep up your great work, my friend!

  29. Grieve, you ROCK. And we've been in awe of you since DAY 1 (our Day 1, that is...)

Congrats on 5 years and glad to hear you'll be carrying on!

  30. I'd like to second Jeremiah's advice with the words of Vineger Joe Stillwell: "illigitimi non carborundum".
Thanks for letting me be part of your grieving process!

  32. Please don't slow down or shut the site down! I recently moved from the LES to the SF Bay Area and read your blog every day to keep up on my old 'hood! Thank you for this! :)

  34. Some people talk to themselves while sitting in a McDonalds, others walk the streets of the EV mumbling things incoherent to anyone else...and then there's you, someone who actually has an audience - and what an audience it is. Well informed, smart even occasionally cantankerous curmudgeons. Congratulations

  35. Here's to another 5 years of grieving! :)

You and your followers have become my daily bread. Thanks for all your hard work and for enabling our community to come together in so many ways.

  36. Congrats on five years! You're definitely one of the highlights of my day. I think we'll all pitch in & get you a new mousepad. Or something...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Keep up the good work. I'm not against a small ad on the site to provide some sustenance to you.

I do have to wonder how someone could leave the fascinating world of Tare Reid behind, she's such a talent.

  38. The NY Times should have such good investigative reporting, thank you for keeping us with a clue and on top of things here in the hood.

  39. Good thing the world didn't end today, otherwise it would have been 1 day short of 5 yrs. Grieversary.

Here's to 5 more years of arrows and bendy thingys.

Cupcakes and froyos on me. Woooooooo!

  40. what better way to celebrate the last day on earth then to wish ev a happy birthday - and to get the news that even if the world is scheduled to end, evgrieve is not.
thanks for your informative blog, and for the freedom you allow everyone, even though there are a lot of folks i do not agree with, and others i wish would shut up.

  41. Well done mate. Enjoy your stuff almost daily.

  42. That's probably the first time that I am truly happy for somebody else's addiction. Thank you Grieve, happy anniversary, and keep it rocking and rolling. Your blog is one of the very few sites I visit daily, often more than once. And though you have some strong competitors, there is nobody reporting better about our neighborhood

  43. Happy Birthday, Grieve! I'm sure I'm repeating several others' comments and accolades, but your blog is indispensable for its information, be it happy or sad, infuriating or exhilarating, or just plain disseminating.

I've been enjoying reading it for almost as long as you've been writing it, keeping up with our 'hood while away, and with issues of importance always, though don't always make it to visit daily...

Here's to many many more years, even if you - as you should! - take the occasional refresher/hiatus. Just don't make it too long please! Thank you for everything.

  44. With all the Santas, Woos and the Woh's and whatnots out there, your blog and your regular commentators keeps me sane; not to mention a good chuckle!

So Happy Anniversary and many effing more!!!

  45. Many, many thanks for your valuable work.

  46. Congratulations! Your blog is part of what makes most days worthwhile. It's educational and fun, too. Here's to many more years.

  47. I love you, Grieve. Thanks for keeping us updated on everything. I don't even live in the EV anymore but I still keep up with the blog to know what's going on. Maybe someday I'll return and I hope you'll still be there if I do.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Why not celebrate by doing something different? How about a bunch of crappily written or just plain boring entires? Wouldn't be much fun for us, but it'd be something you haven't done before.

    ReplyDelete
  49. A thank you from me, too. Five years of work is an accomplishment. Many people have never done anything at all along the lines of what you are doing, even for a little while.

  51. Happy Birthday Grieve. well done, I am honored to live in a neighborhood that has such a thoughtful blogger. Imagine all those other neighborhoods, their gentrification just goes on without any commentary... You should franchise, open stores all over the city... Wait...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Thanks for all you do! I look forward to checking the blog pretty much daily, especially keeps me in touch when i'm out of town. Congrats.

  53. I think you should branch out. I was at Chase on B the other day, and noticed the chairs and coffee table with the big windows to the street corner. This is a perfect set for a "Good Morning East Village" TV show, though it should probably start around noon.
