Looking at the penthouses atop Starbucks on First Avenue



I'm strangely curious about the apartments atop 219 First Ave. at East 13th Street... with that addition that looks as if it blew in from another building...

The building, which had structural damage, had been under renovation going back to 2007. (And the corner space was home to Mee Noodle Shop, which is returning a few doors away.)

The apartments here hit the market last June. I never looked at the penthouse, though. Turns out there are two penthouse units, and both are on the market now. One is $4,395 ... the slightly smaller one is $4,095, per Streeteasy.

    It's been a few years, and yet every time I walk past there I still wonder how the f*** that awful addition was okayed for that building. It looks atrocious and I just can't make peace with it.

    You know you're a New Yorker when $4k for a 2br penthouse sounds actually kinda reasonable. Not that I could afford it, of course!

    ...and I remember when the building across the street was painted green... a friend lived on the top floor (walk up); there was a view to the wtc from her wc, and a coven on the first floor (and that apartment was painted red!) yikes!

    I kinda like it. It is not the usual knock it down and glass box attack. Do I think the penthouse apartment is an ugly apt? Yes. the interior is ridiculously plain despite the views. I have been enjoying watching the residents of this one for awhile as I walk by. Like most 4k rentals, the parents have enough to get them in there, but not enough for window treatments that most glass boxes require. At least the students look good naked (for the most part.) However, I live across the street from the penthouse in the copper building; its male resident likes to towel off his aged out of shape body at the top of the stairs with the shades up... Ughhh.

    Those interior steps are awfully steep – definitely not for the Forever 42 crowd. This place requires young people with money, or it stays vacant for a long time.

    Is there an elevator built into the building for that? For 4,400 a month there is no fucking way I'm climbing four flights of stairs.
