Archie & Sons is now open on Third Avenue at St. Mark's Place... we've already heard good things about the 50s-style luncheonette, from the no-nonsense interior to the straightforward menu.
We wrote about it back on July 30:
Archie & Sons has roots on Long Island (Hewlett) where proprietor Howie Cohen ran Archie's Deli until 2010.
Cohen is also one of the investors who bought the Papaya King brand several years ago.
While we didn't get a chance to speak with Cohen, Blake Gower, part of the Papaya King team, told us a little more about Archie & Sons.
"Howie and his family have been in the business for decades. The presence of B&H and Stage reinforced our thinking that the East Village was the right kind of neighborhood to bring this to life in NYC; there's a certain warmth and appreciation for homey neighborhood places that persists in the East Village," Gower said. "I grew up eating at the original Archie's — I still have dreams about side dishes of Howie's macaroni salad."

Established 1983? It looks/sounds like they just opened.. this week. So they are lying already.

Maybe so, but it was established in Long Island, not here. If Mars Bar were to re-open say in Brooklyn and had the sign est. 1980's, would that be right? I'm with BT. Misleading. I'm sure these guys and this diner will be a good contribution to the neighborhood and a breath of fresh air from the overpriced trendeatery and bars in the neighborhood, but still. Same as this

No need to be misleading. Let your diner speak for itself. The sign will be trapping tourists and transients who know no better. Heck, people think that that Robatayaki ramen has always been there, not knowing that Love Saves the Day was there before. Speaking of which, Robatayaki also had a misleading 50% off menu, which was really doubly inflated. And that ramen joint has been closed for a while; saw renovation inside. Maybe the ghost of LSTD visited them.
Anyway, founded, instead of established would be acceptable.
I'm can I already see the Long Islanders double-parking in front of this place...

I imagine the guys behind the market that went in and out of the former Kim's Video place so fast are lamenting that they could have held out a little longer. Or, at least, signed their lease closer to the building's (eventual) occupancy.
I tried the BLT and macaroni salad yesterday and they were great. The sandwich was fresh, the bread was awesome. A+

ReplyDeleteJust tried Archie & Sons Greek pizza, made with spinach, mozzarella and feta on a toasted pita, served with a side of mac salad, it was amazing. The also make a very good Arnold Palmer (iced tea and lemonade) and egg creams, and their breakfast plate with eggs any style with potatoes and toast are good too. Nice to have another good diner/luncheonette in the neigborhood. EV Grieve, we have a winner!
