[Updated] The 7-Eleven signage is up, and someone has already spit on the front window

On Avenue A and East 11th Street, the plywood is down and the sign is up... And a tipster noted that a cyclist zipped by, slowing down long enough to spit on the front window.

Last we heard this location will open tomorrow...

Updated 3:26 p.m.

Anton van Dalen shared a few more photos from the ceremonial 7-Eleven signage unveiling today...

  2. Used to be a neighborhood bar in this space. BaronA...Lots of your "Woohooers" making noise after 11pm...(But lots of art and culture, and fun and neighbors...)Now it's 7-11...Enjoy your Slushees East Village!!!!!

  3. I want to first in line to buy a Slurpee or Big Gulp..

  4. No one wants a 7-11 but I bet the people that live in that building would prefer it over Bar on A.

  5. Get 'em while you can 'cause that 7-Eleven will be nothing more than an E.V. Grieve trivia question this time next year.

  6. Bar on A used to some cool parties back in the day. However, they got a hard time from the tenants above. Once the owner died it was downhill.
I dunno what folks expect when they move into a place above a bar. Hope they enjoy the slurpees.

  7. I just walked by and they have workers out front offering passerby food. I politely said no to a little taco!

  8. "A tipster".....who just happened to be there as alleged spitter drove by......who knew where to specifically look for spit-spot....AND who happened to have a quiver of arrows strung over their shoulder......hmmmmm???

  10. I'll be happy to spit on it as well!

  11. A double whammy -- a Citibank and a 7-11. Might as well put a Citibike docking station in front for a perfect trifecta.

  12. MY GOD! THAT BUILDING USED TO BE MY HOME!

  13. pretty sure a one day boycott isnt going to drive 711 out of business

might need to keep that going for a few months/years buddy

  14. How do we know the culprit wasn't simply spitting on the Citibank sign?

I don't remember the taxpayers having to pony up for 7-11's investment bank's losses

  15. Oh how I used to lose my mind there... BOA, sniff (I mean 'sniff' too... Manny where are you now?)

What makes you think folks living upstairs moved into a place above a bar?
There actually was a time when the bars in this neighborhood were patronized by people that lived here, and mostly respected the fact that folks lived here.

I am concerned by your gratuitous use of "quotes" around "tipster"!

Yes there was a time.. I remember DJing there in the backroom, lots of nice folks.
However, I remember that one organizer told me that BoA would get complaints from a tenant above. The sound-system wasn't even that loud and definitely lacked bass. The owner was trying to do his best to accommodate but this tenant was a real pain apparently.

  19. the irony is 7-11 sells the same nutritionless corporate shit as the bodegas - its getting to be like a service area on the interstate EVERYWHERE you go, only without toilets that are useful.

  20. Fashion Bug, the rallies are weekly and will continue for some time.

  21. That looks even more horrendous than I could have believed possible. Is this the "sensitive to the neighborhood" facade we were promised? Cos if so, I sure as shit would have hated to see what they would have installed otherwise.

But I do truly hate this.

  22. GOB away people at this monstrosity - daily if not EVERY time you pass... And NEVER patronize this shitdump!

What about the stop work orders?!? What is the point of them if they just ignore them? Insulting.

    Again, I will say - FUCK 7-11!!!!!
Please join in as you pass and shout it out loud (but at reasonable hours)

  23. BOA was originally a very quite, very romantic little bar. But that's WHO the patrons were.
A bar is just a bar; until the good people are run-off by the bad people.
Story is as old as time.

  24. On the positive side...
Judging by who I see inside these various 711s around downtown, this will, hopefully, act as a magnet for all the tweekers, drunks, and mental defectives. Keep them clear of the rest of the neighborhood.
    Like a big roach motel.

  25. I hate to be negative... but isn't all the protesting free publicity for the new 7 11?
Shouldn't we focus more on zoning preventing new chain store openings? i.e. San Francisco laws?

    ReplyDelete
  26. How did they get around the stop work orders? Do they simply ignore them, do the work and then pay the fines? I don't understand how they got away with that. Did they rectify the air conditioning situation in the back?

  27. I believe there is a large residential complex being built across from this 7-11 in the Mary Help Of Christians space? And another just west on B and 12th...When these units are populated, good luck trying to tell the new tenants how they should boycott 7-11 because the EV used to be a cool non-corporate neighborhood. The capital went into the 7-11 because the growth in population is clear on their SPREADSHEETS...Boycotting is awesome...Won't do a thing...

  28. They pay the fines and nobody cares. They don't pay the fines and nobody cares. DOB is the absolute worst city agency we have, bar none. And the fines aren't even that big, and they don't follow the developer, ie he can get fined in 100 buildings and more permits are given to the same developer, as long as it's a different address.

The protest rallies are not the only activities the No 7-Eleven group has going, it's just the most public. If you'd like to help please contact them through their website.

what does it matter if only one tenant complained? they complained because they could not enjoy their apartment because of the noise coming from the bar.
when a landlord says that you are the only tenant that complained about the lack of heat or hot water, should you remain in the cold?
complaints and praises are subjective. it is not up to us to determine their worth.

  31. Please go in here. Gather many things. Place them on the counter. Leave. Repeat over and over again.

Also, note that I did see a security guard in there tonight. Poor guy. Try to ruin their shit during the day when he's presumably not there.

  32. 8:48PM - The only people you hurt with that juvenile tactic are the underpaid workers, not Corporate.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't know how much difference it would make, but I might have some respect for 7-11 if the company addressed the community's concerned and had some outreach. It is also insulting to see a security guard in the store. I don't see any of the local bodegas stationing security by the front door.

  34. Make posterboards with the images of the vents. There is visual clarity of an overriding of law, respect, a willful corruption of the laws of the city. Push for city officials to address the bullying disrespect of the citizens and city laws. We are a bigger franchise than 7-11. Use your franchise.

  35. Look man it's all over. A student from whothefuckknowswhatsuburb said to me, "I love 711, I grew up hanging out in the parking lot and they a mad cheap. don't bitch about my 711!"

The area is welcoming to students and finance types. They have no idea what it is about to be apart of a community, nor do they care. They aren't into music and art (for the most part).

The party is over and a new corporate culture has taken over. I value my friends of the EV and savor the awesome parts of my neighborhood.

  36. Walking by other 7-11's in the city, I can't fathom how they will survive. All I see is a sparse convenient store with about 10% of the items found down the street at a bodega.

And yeah, give the corporation all the hell you want. But harassing the underpaid workers is pretty shitty.

  37. We don't encourage anyone to do anything stupid to the employees who work in the store.

Understandably, last night the staff were not thrilled when we showed up to protest and hand out flyers, but we let the guard know we were not there to cause trouble for him or the staff inside. It was amicable and we went about handing out our flyers and talking to people passing by who could not believe there is now a 7-Eleven in the neighborhood. At one point two workers came out to bring us what we think were tacos(?) One was very friendly, the other not so much. We politely declined the food(?) and let them know we were not there to aggravate them, just hand out fliers. This is not a war against a few people selling junk food for a living, it's a war against 7-Eleven who are strategically flooding the city with stores to push out local business then scale back once the damage has been done.

There's absolutely no need for 7-Eleven at this location as you can see THREE BODEGAS from the store.

  39. Glycerin in soap. Glycerin in Slurpees. Vomit.

  40. I have noticed with this 7-11 and others that there isn't a lot of stuff in the store. While a local bodega will have everything from milk to sugar to dish soap, 7-11 has a much more limited supply of stuff, and it's all junk food. How do they survive selling so little?

    ReplyDelete
  41. They're going to have to sell a lot of slurpees to make that 35k rent. And fuck Westminster for charging such an exorbitant rent that only a chain can afford it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Say it again, Anon 7:41, and louder, "FUCK WESTMINSTER!"
