After 34 years, Silver Spurs is closing on Broadway

Ugh. The always-reliable Silver Spurs diner on Broadway near East Ninth Street is closing, as their farewell sign above points out. Their lease has expired, and Sunday is their last day in business.

A new bank branch will look pretty nice in this spot, huh?

And we're running out of diners around here… with the loss of University Diner … and, a few years back, Bon Vivant...

Thanks to @elivalley for the photo.

  1. Not sure if the service excelled at this location, but the one on Houston and LaGuardia was overpriced and the food was bad.

  2. agreed- I live on this block- the food and service was not that good- hence, it was filled with mostly clueless tourists who wandered by it on the Broadway shopping strip and didn't know of the much better-value brunch places just blocks away in the East Village.

  3. i never once set foot in the place. i didn't understand what it was supposed to represent. i always figured it was for nyu kids and their families on dorm move in day or something.

  4. This was probably one of my favorite places for a burger in the city.
Highly underrated! Super tasty, super filling.

It was always a safe go-to whenever I was really hungry and wanted a quiet place to sit and enjoy a full sized meal in NYC that didn't empty my pockets completely.

  6. Well this is next to a friend of mines house and I will miss it. We often all eat there together when my fiance visits from Italy. He will be back here in January but Silver Spurs will be gone.. :(

  7. The food there was always horrible. Nothing but microwaved chicken, grey burgers, and soggy fries.

  8. Always liked going there...prices got a little steep but still. Now another chain will move in...

  9. When the Riviera Diner became a Starbucks I was freaked out.

  10. Yeah, I'm not exactly heart-broken about them. But I'm definitely heart-broken about the continued loss of good 'ol run of the mill diners.

  11. Because the "U" in "Spurs" always read as an "O" to me, I always read it as "Silver Spores." I never once set foot in this place and can't say I'm particularly torn-up about their closing.

I'm sorry to contemplate that it's going to become another run-of-the-mill chain; at least the space on St. Mark's and 2nd is becoming something interesting—a DF Mavens. We can hope…

  13. That's so funny Scuba Diva! I had an ex BF that would call it Silver Sport. He actually mispronounced lots of words "Gold" instead of "Goal". Drove me nuts.

  14. I lived around the corner in the late 80's and it was the place my parents and I went during their visits for burgers and tuna melts. I lived around the corner again in the early 2000's and it's where the people who lived nearby sat in shell shocked silence on the evening of 9/11 because we couldn't stand being alone in our apartments anymore staring at our tvs in horror. The place had a weird decor but their takeout menu had all these crazy burger names and was hilarious to read if you were really stoned. They were also great for breakfast delivery if you were really hungover. RIP funky neighborhood joint. Whenever I told any New Yorker I lived at 9th near Broadway, they ALWAYS said, oh, you live near Silver Spurs.

  15. Cozy Soup 'N' Burger at 739 Broadway between Astor and Waverly Places might be the only pre-1990 diner left in the East Village.

  16. I can't say the food was the best. It was typical diner fare, but I used to eat here a lot when I worked in the Kmart building. It is sad to think we are losing yet another diner.

  17. Last time i ate there I said it would be the last time I ate there... That was a few years ago, and I guess it is going to be true...

  18. I live across the street and I'm sad. It's a diner. If you were expecting a gourmet meal, you should have gone somewhere else. I'm sad to see so many old places disappear. I used to take my kids here when they were babies and my parents when they were in town. It's greasy, but delicious and convenient. Will miss their milkshakes too!

  19. Drew, we love Cozy Soup 'N Burger! If that place closes we'll be devastated.

Never set foot in Silver Spurs either. Didn't even know it was a diner. I just thought it was a bbq joint on account of its longhorn decor.

  21. Sad to see neighborhood places like this closing because of skyrocketing rents.

Jacks on University gone- to be replaced by yet another bank. How many more banks do we need????

    ReplyDelete
  22. Believe it or not, there is zoning in mid-town to limit the number of banks. That's what we need downtown too!

Oddly, Silver Spur served descent lox on their bagels, not something you usually find in diners!

Where to go around there now? Au Bon Pain? (or as a friend calls it "one good bread"). Eww!

  23. I am bummed. Was my go to place for an egg white omelette and I liked it more than Cozy. Am going to have lunch there tomorrow, my last. Nice people, too.

  24. That sucks. I always wanted to visit here, my brother passed away in the bathroom, an O.D., 2004, it was very sad, we were very close, I actually called and spoke to the manager a few months after he passed away, he spoke fondly of my brother, would give him free coffee, sandwiches, ect. Remembered him as the "nice punk rock kid". Well, too late now:(

  25. Sad to hear 8 years later. My hubby & I are pescretarian and vegan now. We went here on dates in late 80s to hang out, chat and be silly. We loved this hole in the wall diner.
So many fantastic times eating crazy name burgers & drinking.

NYC has lost so many amazing diners over the decades. We are in Jersey, believe me this state is still #1 for diners!!
