E Smoke Shop now anchoring St. Mark's Place and 3rd Avenue

We spotted workers putting up the new sign yesterday afternoon at the newsstand/deli on St. Mark's Place and Third Avenue… and a reader sent us a shot from this morning showing how it's looking… say hello to E Smoke Shop…

A new operator took over the now former New Corner Magazine (or King's Magazine) last month … the fellows who work here couldn't be any nicer … as for the sign … rather schlocky, though maybe the use of S-shapted pipes might seem kind of quaint in about, oh, 50 years. And awesome display of bongs water pipes in the window… some competition for the other shops down the street…

New Corner Magazine closed for renovations; new operator to take over

What happened to DJ Lenny M?

  1. The utter crapification that these head shops are capable of inflicting on an entire neighborhood is breathtaking. I'm pretty sure real estate values in this part of Midtown South/BroHo just dropped by double digits.. The good news is that this is what all those office drones in the Watson Death Star will be staring at in between their focus groups and hackathons.

Let them drop! I'd take a head shop on St. Marks over a 16 Handles or Hoboken Hoof.

Uh oh. Looks like that block's gonna have some anchor drifting problems.

  5. I still say Papaya King screwed-up royally (ha! 'royally' oh, I'm so clever), by not waiting out the lease on that space. Could have been the anchor for the next half century.
I'm betting PK closes the space they occupy now after a couple years.

Papaya Kings go on the corner!

  6. I hope that's still a work in progress because as it stands now, all that prominent corner window display space is going to waste. Not merely from a commercial retail point of view, but just simply making the corner space look more unattractive and uninviting. Ugh.

  10. Miss the guys at King's - knew 'em from the 80s when I started workin' at McSorley's. Glad I got to speak with them before they closed.

Can't say i like the new look/\]feel of this place but as long as it's not another fuckin' yogurt or noodle shop - what the hell. Yeah - Papaya would've been pretty much a perfect natural in this spot. Missed it ya did!

The time for "E.V. Gone" seems to be appoaching - but not until a final showdown from the locals versus newbie entitled brat/frat wankers occurs...in some form or another

What's wrong with a noodle shop, not a fan of Asians?

Seriously a good 10-25% of the EV Whining that goes on seems to have a little anti-Asian sentiment behind it.

  12. Poor Archie's next door... Does that place get any business? Maybe a lunch crowd will come when 51 Astor gets tenants other than Koons? (Or will they all file west to Cosi and Chipotle and Just Salad?)

  13. Reminds me of the strange, mall-like new tattoo shop in the middle of the block on the south side. Super weird and glassy and generic and will not last. Makes no sense.
