The fucking TD Bank signage arrives at the former home of the Mars Bar
At long LAST the much-anticipated TD Bank signage has arrived at the former Mars Bar space… On Jan. 2, 2013, Steve Cuozzo reported at the Post that a 4,300-square-foot TD Bank branch was going to anchor the retail space at Jupiter 21, the new luxury apartment building that rose from the ashes of the Mars Bar and other businesses on Second Avenue and East First Street.
The TDs arrived yesterday afternoon, per EVG reader EJ ...
(BoweryBoogie noted this as well this morning.)
This likely won't do much for those Mars-Bar-is-returning rumors. Maybe next door? This was the rumored space for some kind of Mars Bar redux...
There's also retail space available on the East First Street side... or else someplace simply hasn't removed the sign yet...
And on the doors to the TD job site...
Previously on EV Grieve:
The former Mars Bar is becoming a fucking bank branch
So where's that fucking bank branch that's taking the former Mars Bar space?

Sums up what the east village has become.
ReplyDeleteIf you didn't say where these photos were, I wouldn't have known as it's so g-d generic. I can't even stand walking that block anymore because there's nothing left of NYC on it.
ReplyDeleteAt this point you have to just be happy it isn't a Chase. At least the green breaks up the EV color scheme a little bit.
ReplyDeleteI am proud to be a resident of a neighborhood with such distinctive and world-class architectural design. That puts the needs of actual residents before the desires of carpetbagging capital.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Bagel Guy. And if TD Bank installs a coin counting machine at that location, I may even take a 4 block walk down memory lane.
ReplyDeleteIf rat holes are so desirable, why don't architects design them? They could be built to code, using high-quality materials, developers could build buildings that look like Dresden after the bombing, but they'd be liveable. People would flock to them, right?
ReplyDeletePlease do not pee in the TDMarsBank coin counting machine
ReplyDeleteuuuggghhhh
ReplyDeletepee? nah, the coin counting machines are meant to house solids. just sayin'...

What happened to TB Bank? Regardless, this belongs in Mars.
ReplyDeleteWhat was the return deal about?

ReplyDeleteHa! I put a post-it note on my computer to remind myself to write TD and not TB!
On behalf of all Canadians.....I apologize for this idiocy.
ReplyDeleteBut just FYI, we're pretty sure that most of our major banks, including TfuckinD are now based in the Bahamas, or the Turks & Caicos. They certainly don't work for us any longer (IF they ever did).
well, the mars bar wasn't coming back and if it was it would've looked more like the new Dempsey's up the street. that said, of all of the things that could've taken this space (duane reade, a food court, burlington coat factory, an overpriced celebrity-chef-owned restaurant, 7/11, another Chase Bank, or a B&T kiddie club) i'll take a TD. TD is a good bank, as banks go, and I'm happy to be able to do my bidness without the extra trip to b-way or 3rd ave & 10th.
ReplyDeleteThe way I see it, if this had been a Chase, I wouldn't have to walk all the way to the next corner for an ATM!
ReplyDeleteI love everything about it this. So sleek and sexy. I mean the place will be full of money, everyone loves money! What could be better? Plus now I can do all my banking just blocks away from Whole Foods. I just hope they can add a juice store somewhere in the area.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lot of whining over a dingy dirty hole in the wall of a bar. Come on everyone...find another place to drink. I can remember when people in the neighborhood whined about not having a bank. The only bank you could find in the EV was Emigrant at the site of the old Filmore East. Now we have lots of banks and even more bars! There are definitely more bars than banks in the EV. So what's the problem? You can go to your bank, get some cash and then go to the bar to waste it. All within a couple of city blocks. So what's the problem? Are you just whining about progress? You and the hundreds of millions of human beings who have lived and died on this planet before you ever even had a drink...or $1 to put in the bank. Get over it.
ReplyDeleteProgress? WTF does that even mean, progress? World War 2 came after World War 1, was that progress? No.
ReplyDeleteDollar pizza came after two dollar pizza, was that progress? No. Bush #2 came after Clinton #1, was that progress? No. Just because one thing replaces another does not make it good. If you can comprehend that simple little thought then I think we are making progress. And tell your therapist he owes me a hundred bucks for doing his job, now that we are making progress.

ReplyDeleteYou sound like a drag to be around.
(Pssst, It's less about losing a bar and more about losing character.)
"Get over it."
ReplyDeleteThis needs to be added with such classics as “If you don’t like noise in the EV (or The LES, or The bowery, etc.), move to_______________. And just because you drop a Fillmore East reference, it does not make you cool. Did you ever go there (Mars Bar)? Full disclosure, I only went there a couple of times (it was out of my stumbling home range) but just knowing it was there, (like Yellowstone National Park), in all its dive bar glory, (RIP Blarney Cove as well), made me feel good.
Wow, I've never seen anything like it.
ReplyDeleteI was only there twice, in the mid 80s. But I well remember the size of the place. If every person now claiming to have been a regular, it would have had to be well over 25'000 square feet. It was not.
ReplyDeleteWho gives a fuck about Mars? What about Pfaff’s Beer Garden? Nobody seems to care anymore about the true, the real, the authentic bohemian boĆ®te where “the drinkers and laughers meet to eat and drink and carouse.”
ReplyDeleteGeez, in the way olden days we went to Blue and Gold...
