Xi’an Famous Foods reopens Sunday on St. Mark's Place

After a longer-than-expected renovation, Xi’an Famous Foods at 81 St. Mark's Place near First Avenue reopens on Sunday...

The popular noodle shop closed for renovations back on March 17 and was expected to be closed an estimated three-four weeks. However, there were apparently some issues with the DOB and Con Ed.

Anyway, here's a look inside the renovated space...

  1. Good to see them coming back, I passed by the other day and was surprised to see they were still closed. I just assumed a Bisquiteria or Cronut Express would take it over.

Now we need the same news on S'Mac, they closed down 10 days ago and still haven't re-opened due to mouse and "refrigeration" problems. They also were closed in MAy of last year for the same issue, maybe the mice are more active this time of year, having babies and all so the hawks can stay well fed. Hope S'Mac comes back soon, I'm getting hungry.

  2. Um, looks pretty much the same to me, except they seem to have moved the chrysanthemum tea cooler.

  3. They may have filled in the mysterious F2 or H2, I forget which, blank space in the menu.

  5. is there anything our progressive mayor can do to make this process easier for small businesses?
instead of keeping them closed, fining them and making their lives miserable maybe they could be more helpful? this seems like something the mayor could do to actually help small mom/pop businesses- because im sure they have to pay rent etc while waiting for approval from various city agencies

  6. Geeze... Walked by tonight and freaked out cuz all the signage was gone. What a relief! Thanks Grieve for quelling the mild heart attack!

  7. That whole rating system is a joke to begin with, a Bloombergian leftover. My own kitchen probably wouldn't get more than a gentleman's C.

  8. I stopped by yesterday and it didn't look like they would be ready to open today, so someone please tell me if I'm wrong. Plus it almost two weeks later and S'Mac on 12th St. is still closed down by the Health department.

Something has to give with these city inspectors keeping small businesses closed down for weeks and months at a time. As if Hurricane Sandy didn't do enough damage to local small businesses, the city makes it impossible sometimes to do business here.

  9. Giovanni,

I didn't get a chance to go by today yet… but they tweeted out earlier today that they will be open for their "regular hours" … whatever those are!

  10. Thanks Grieve, I stopped by there later and they were in fact open, and already starting to get busy! I also passed by Sarita's S'Mac, but they were still closed, which is the second weekend in a row of lost business. They are telling people to order delivery from the 33rd St location but I always pick mine up on 12th St, so perhaps they will be back by next weekend. Also noticed almost no one either inside or outside Nicollete pizza on 2nd Ave, wonder how long they will last?
