GG's announces itself on East 5th Street



The awning is up now at GG's, the new restaurant taking over the Goat Town space at 511 E. Fifth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.

Goat Town owner Nick Morgenstern closed the bistro in early July after four years. His new chef, Bobby Hellen, "will forage the back garden for ingredients, including anise hyssop for the devout Mets fan’s 1986 Pizza, topped with spicy soppressata and fennel agrodolce," according to New York magazine.

As for GG's, New York noted — "its name a tribute to a neighborhood local." This former local?

    I'm all for second chances and I realize that we learn from our mistakes but the constant reboots and "how about this cuisine instead of the last one we tried?" approach which restaurants are doing these days makes me think they just don't know what they are doing.
    The problem lies with the management when businesses fail, getting a new chef, new name, staff, or menu will change nothing when those in charge got it wrong.

    I doubt that a devout 1986 Mets fan would know and/or care of anise hyssop. Will those ah and fa be muddled and curated individually and be paired with a deconstructed martini?

    The former local GG is Lady Gaga, duh.

    @Anon - Nick (GG's owner) is actually quote a good manager, hence the success of his two other places. Goat Town didn't close because it was failing...

    Historically speaking, Lady Gaga was *never* a local, she was a visitor at best, from upper Manhattan...but yes, that's the kind of crap a publicist has to sell to pander to desperate teens that want to 'belong'.
