Welcome to a 'Slow Zone'
We spotted the first of the new "Neighborhood Slow Zone" signs the other morning ... this one on St. Mark's Place just east of First Avenue.
To recap! The Alphabet City-Tompkins Square Slow Zone is the community-based program that reduces the speed limit within designated zones from 30 mph to 20 mph. (Read the background about all this here.)
The map below shows the designated Slow Zone — First Avenue east to the FDR, and from East Second Street north to East 14th Street.

In addition to the 20 mph speed limit (15 mph near schools), a Slow Zone area features speed bumps (21 here) and new striping and signage to slow drivers.
CB3 member Chad Marlow helped put the plan in motion for the East Village early last year.

Your remarks and lively debates are welcome, whether supportive or critical of the views herein. Your articulate, well-informed remarks that are relevant to an article are welcome.
However, commentary that is intended to "flame" or attack, that contains violence, racist comments and potential libel will not be published. Facts are helpful.
If you'd like to make personal attacks and libelous claims against people and businesses, then you may do so on your own social media accounts. Also, comments predicting when a new business will close ("I give it six weeks") will not be approved.
Will anyone notice those pretty but too soft signs? Red or yellow would get noticed.
ReplyDeleteI moved to NYC to get away from slow town. There is no fucking hope.
ReplyDeleteThat stretch of St Marks has a small private school with very few students... I wonder if the slow zone is more to protect the fratbros and sororsistutes that plague the block at nite
ReplyDeleteNo, ShutUpHooker, it's to protect residents like you and me. And I just recently got hit by a driver who didn't slow down for a turn and went through pedestrians while making a turn. Such is the entitlement of some drivers in our area. And of course no consequences to him. I'll take fratbros over irresponsible drivers who think a 2,000 lb machine is a toy, any day.
ReplyDeleteThe annoying super-low speed limits and speed bumps don't have any effect on the drunk or reckless drivers that cause 98 percent of the problems. They ignore the speed limits and blast right over the bumps. It's like gun control, very effective for disarming the decent law abiding public, completely ignored by the actual criminal class.
ReplyDeleteThe libs think they can legislate human nature. Open your eyes kids.
