Oh fudge, Puddin' popped for incomplete paperwork

The City has temporarily closed Puddin', the small shop at 102 St. Mark's Place that sells pudding, pudding-filled cakes and Frozen Puddin' Pops.

The note on the door here between Avenue A and First Avenue explains: "Oh fudge! We forgot some paperwork. Be back soon!"

  1. Close. Close like your brethren in stupid food Brooklyn Piggies and take those Biscuit people down with you. Then maybe we can get some food outlets that aren't geared to the pixy stix crowd. Stop trying to make New Yorkers a bunch of diabetic alcoholic lardasses.

  3. Probably due to the Bill Cosby scandal.

  4. Pudding: A dessert with a creamy consistency ex-suburbanites sell as dinner in their trendy, niche, youth-orientated NYC restaurants.

  5. These comments are absolutely hilarious. Thanks, Anon. 2:47, 3:14 and IzF - having just come from spending a mournful few final hours at DeRoberti's, I needed a laugh.

  6. And unlike DeRoberti's nobody would care if Pudding Pal went under.

  7. This is why I can no longer walk down St Marks Place. It's turned into a strip mall of dumb and dumber food stuffs. Stay in Nebraska and do this shit.

  8. You see places like this on the Food Network all of the time but it's usually in some small town called No Place, America, where the local sfolk appreciate the gimmick and tourists it attracts. Like a UFO or Yetti museum for example. These foodie places are our UFO museums.

  9. I don't get these responses... Sure, it may not be a place that's up your alley, but I applaud any quirky, niche business that's owned by individuals, not corporations.

  10. What are all those long term visitors going to eat for til it's back. You know the ones in workout gear but not working out. Jiggling down the street looking like a suburban mom that can't find where she parked the minivan.

  11. LOL Why is everybody always hating so much on here about EVERY SINGLE THING?!

    ReplyDelete
  12. We don't hate EVERY SINGLE THING. We like old-school bakeries and vintage clothes and record stores and birds in the park and other animals, and sometimes even brand-new stuff like bagel makers or ice cream sellers.

Honestly, if you don't object to an all-pudding all=the-time store in New York City, I'm assuming you're a fat Midwesterner and should probably get back to perusing the Swiss Colony catalog to decide between the 50 lb. vs. 100 lb. ball of cheese.

  13. What is so wrong with pudding? Seriously, this place is a small business, not corporate owned, does not serve booze, does not block the sidewalk, does not serve the ever-hated brunch. It seems to meet all the criteria that people on here typically complain is lacking in the neighborhood today.

Surely, nobody will argue in favor of any health benefits of pudding. But, to the writer of the comment at 1:52, what is so different between the seller of pudding and the seller of ice-cream, which you assert is a business you would be in favor of?

I think there is just a lot of negativity in the comments on here. Much of it is warranted, but pick your poison people and be consistent. This business has much of what your complaints seem to wish there was more of in the neighborhood.

Disclaimer: I am not overweight, nor from the Midwest. I have lived in this neighborhood for decades.

  14. some of you guys are such a joke. its 2014, fashions are going to change. stop hating so much, have a cigarette and laugh... you're getting old but you don't have to get cranky.

  15. "fashions are going to change" coming from someone who advocates cigarette smoking. You cannot even make better Midwest/Southern fat diabetic transient shit up yo!

Hey guys, don't be sad about "Brooklyn" Piggies closing—have this bucket of lard and a spoon!

Yeah, what's so wrong with puddin'? Or Scotch Tape for that matter? Because my new Scotch Tape Boutique is coming soon!

  17. Yeah! Stop hating! Hate makes you old! And dead! Then who will pay for your coffin? And dig the hole? Not you, dead hater! And why don't you smoke? If you're so hateful you probably want to die so start smoking hater! Puff puff hater! Fashion changes its clothes. Occasionally Amanda Bynes does too. So what hater? So what? Don't hate pudding. I got a parking ticket today hater. What do you think about that? And I ran out of coffee too hater.

  18. Theme aside, not having your biz in order is amature hour. You get your paper work done and you keep your business in order until your lease expires. This is akin to shutting down for the day to celebrate your anniversary, taking Monday's off , or opening at noon on weekdays. Minor leagues. Owning a biz in the EV is a privilage. Folks need to start taking it more seriously.

  19. This sucks - where will I get my (overpriced, but delicious) rice pudding now? But the "paperwork" problem seems suspicious... maybe "paperwork" is the new "renovations." I've always wondered how this place survives on selling pudding and coffee alone.

  22. I hope she reopens soon. She was a very good neighbor. And lord knows the last thing St.marks Place needs is another beer or wine bar.

  23. I hardly frequent the area but when I did I would make a stop at Puddin and buy some for my friends back in Queens. It is sad to see this place go. As for all those individuals who have nothing positive to say go stick your head in the snow, preferably the yellow kind.
