In a strong wind, these wind chimes on 7th Street are keeping residents awake

An East Seventh Street resident shares this Urban Etiquette Sign with us.

The original sign maker left this message:

"Your wind chimes in a strong wind, sound like an incessantly ringing doorbell with the power to awaken one from a deep sleep."

And it certainly must be loud, as two other residents chimed (sorry!) in with their own handwritten comments, including one from that person we all hate to be but must at times: "that cranky neighbor."

  1. I live on the north side of East 6th and can hear them. Every morning from my bedroom window. I really like them.

    Talk about first-world problem. HA!

They are quite calming rather than sirens or living in the LES and having to be woken up by the sounds of puking and revelers resisiting arrest.

They aren't those clanky cheap chimes. They're pretty tranquil and sound better than the gates being thrown up every morning around the block

Whoever you are with the chimes keep them!

  3. That combined with the noise of children playing, those goddam birds singing and rain on my windowsill! Don't even get me started about that stench of bread coming from the bakery!

  4. I live next to a community garden which has chimes and yes they ring like crazy when it's windy but I don't mind it at all, it tells me a little bit about the weather. However I had a friend whose neighbor had massive chimes outside his bedroom window on the balcony of a high rise building. He negotiated with the neighbors (and the building's management) to have the chimes tied together each night at 10PM, which kept the peace. So compromise with chimes makes for good neighbors.

  5. Chiming in to agree with NOTORIOUS.

  6. My boyfriend and I like them too, but they occasionally keep us from falling asleep. Maybe consider a rotational plan? 😋

  7. I agree with the last commenter. This is my favorite. Fucking awesome. I live on 7th street and C and love the honesty of the neighborhood. I agree. We are not in the land of country bumpkins with large estates. We're city folk who consciously live in over priced boxes. We need sleep, not music. Chuck the wind chimes immediately.

  8. I would assume having a next door neighbor with chimes like this is much different than having the pleasantly chiming coming from a nearby community garden or from around the corner...

  9. I'm on the north side of 6th with windows facing the courtyard and we hear them all the time as well. They're kind of nice tho. Very dulcet tones.

  10. This is NYC, not a country lane! We don't sleep here.

  11. If I lived there I would find the noise from the wind chimes annoying.

  12. I live in the same building as the chimes, my bedroom window is about five feet from the chimes, but they're great.
Please don't remove them all !!

  14. Perhaps someone crafty could knit them a chime cosy?

  15. Do we know which wind chimes are being referred to? There are some near me that I hear that I think are nice, but they are small and don't seem very loud.

  16. for what it's worth... i haven't heard the chimes all day. think they're gone?

  17. Take your chimes in at night. It's that simple.

  18. Wind chimes keep evil spirits away. Evil spirits are more prevalent on windy days. You would want them to be taken down at the exact moment when they're needed the most. It's crazy!

  19. Whatever happened to "the city that never sleeps?" It's alive and well!

I'm thankful I don't hear these; I have tinnitus and wind chimes drive me crazy.

  20. Just hang a giant dream catcher next to the chimes. The positive vibes from it will deaden the sound. My neighbors baby kept waking me up with its crying so I hung it out the window but i could STILL hear it crying. Then I hung a dream catcher next to it and voila! No more noise. That baby has been silent for a week now.

  22. Sorry, I agree with the complainers. What is the rationale for wind chimes anyway? If it's windy you can tell from the movement of trees, garbage, etc. As for it being "music", it is as musical as metal garbage cans banging together.
