With the Christodora House out of the picture, red-tailed hawk parents Christo and Dora have been searching for just the right space to build their nest this spring. (OK, late winter.)
After a few false leads, Goggla has discover where the nest is. Actually, make that nests. In recent days, Christo and Dora have been building two nests on AC units on the top floor of the Ageloff Towers on Avenue A between East Third Street and East Fourth Street…
And some nest-in-progress photos via Bobby Williams…
Interesting choice given they are a few blocks away from the plentiful sticks and rats of Tompkins Square Park … above a far more active part of the neighborhood… (compared to their spot on the Christodora on Avenue B and East Ninth Street last year)…

ReplyDeleteWho says no one wants to move into pre-war buildings anymore? When New York finally converts every last building into a glass fishbowl, where will all these birds build their nests?
ReplyDeleteI pray the apartment dwellers will be told it's illegal to remove the nest without approval from a government agency and not to bother the hawks. We can't cross our fingers and hope for the best. Someone needs to let the tenants know what is going on and that they need to not bother the birds!

ReplyDeleteI saw one of them yesterday in the back garden of 66 Avenue A, in one of the 6 story trees. Plenty of nesting materials back here. Wish they were nesting in this location, as I would volunteer a window for a webcam.

ReplyDeleteUpdate from some people in the building: They'd be delighted to have nests, but the hawks just drop the sticks off and leave, without making any attempts to arrange things or spending any time there. Hawks do stockpile sticks, and they also make decoy nests. So, chances are that these are not where the birds intend to set up shop, although it would be a welcoming location for them.
