Spotted Owl Tavern opens today in the former Destination space on Avenue A

John Cutillo, the owner of Local 138 and Iggy's Keltic Lounge on Ludlow Street as well as the Grand Victory in Williamsburg, opens his latest venture today.

Look for the Spotted Owl Tavern on the northwest corner of Avenue A and 13th Street ... in the former Destination space. We're told that the vibe will be old-school neighborhood bar.

And there is food. The owner-chef of Black Tree over on Orchard Street helped create the pub-style menu.

The Spotted Own Tavern opens daily at 3.

Destination Bar opened in the summer of 2009 … and closed this past Feb. 1.

  1. Mushroom Flatbread, chi chi tacos, a burger? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Outside of the Weathered Fries this menu is a huge flop. Boring, predictable, most of their items are available at nearby established haunts. That said, Destination Bar needed some love. It failed at that "rough on the edges dive bar cool whatever" aesthetic for me and wasn't that appealing to hang out in.

  2. " old-school neighborhood bar" Old school bars will never return once the last one has been shut. This make no mistake is the new school bar, with loud talking, yelling and music spilling out of the open facade. I feel for those living above or nearby this summer. Not a welcome addition to upper Ave A.

That's not a Caprese salad. The sandwiches look OK price-wise though.

  6. I hope they will be good neighbors. Please respect us, and we will patronize your business long after the NYU students have moved on to the next thing!

  7. agreed - "Old School NeighborHood Bar" = loud people on the street and peeing in doorways next to the bar.

This space's windows are floor to ceiling and open up patio style. These windows are suppose to be closed after 10 pm to prevent noise but Destination Bar never closed their windows even after many complaints

  8. Looking forward to this place! Nice change to some of the other spots around here. If Sandy worked on the menu, should be great!

  10. @10:07 Let's not make any quick judgements. A lot of bar owners are great and work with the neighbors to keep noise levels down and keep the kids under control. Let's give it a shot before we assume the worst. The menu looks great and it could turn out to be a great neighborhood bar!

  11. Please stop shilling, shillers. I'm sure you're lovely people and good friends to the bar owner, but it's always so obvious when people do this, and such a turnoff. And when it gets out of hand, you become a neighborhood laughingstock like Empire Biscuits. Don't let this happen to you. Chill out.

  12. Not sure if the folks who are raising concerns about this attended the CB 3 meeting to voice concerns. A small group of residents did, but without more people they were not able to stop this sale so . . .if you have concerns about a bar or restaurant on your block opening or not adhering to hours etc, contact CB 3 and attend a hearing or register a complaint. if enough people act then CB 3 will act, but if people don't take the time to attend meetings, write letters or contact the office then they won't.

I don't disagree with you comment however bar owners create problems for neighbors when they install open facades rather then leave it shut as most businesses do. The open facade brings the party to the streets, attracts passers by and brings more people into their establishments. Music is cranked to create excitement and get noticed for blocks around. Bar owners which choose this way of doing business really don't care about their neighbors plain and simple. We that live nearby suffer why they make money and enemies with the neighborhood. People that defends this kind of place should admit they are friends or investors in them or worse could really care less about those that live in earshot.

  14. Dude, give them a chance! Why so negative before they're even open?

  15. Drop Off Service & Horsebox next door both have awesome beers on tap and great happy hours! Destinations was always empty because they didn't bother competing. Hopefully these guys have great after-work pricing.

  16. Looking forward to checking this place out. Food looks good and reasonably priced. The other bars are always under control so I don't foresee any problems here.
