Your weekly Black Seed bagels post

The sidewalk bridge went up yesterday outside 174-176 First Ave., where workers are rehabbing the space for the new tenant — Black Seed bagels...

And here's a look inside yesterday at the interior renovations of the former DeRobertis Pasticceria and Caffe space...

Thanks to EVG reader William Klayer for the shots!

  1. Where the hell is Ess-a? I looked up and down 1st ave, still no sign of them. The rumored space still reads "FOR LEASE". Giving up hope for now, will learn to accept David's Bagels.

  2. Does this seem to be taking a long time? Feels that way.

  3. There are 260 calories in a plain bagel as in no cream cheese etc... a plain donut 198 calories, McDonalds cheeseburger has 313, Oatmeal 145.

  4. Anon 7:35 counting calories are for whimps. Calories are energy you need them. In no way can a doughnut be better or a mcdonalds cheeseburger comparable bc of calories. The figures that are important are carbs, sodium, fat.

  5. You know, for people that claim that they want to preserve as much of the original interior as they can, they're not trying very hard. How difficult is it to put kraft paper on the floors as the work is being done? Now when they inevitably rip up the old tiles, they can be all "They were just too damaged." Yeah. Because you damaged them.

I've always suspected their sincerity and these reno photos just prove they don't give a shit. Oh, but I'm sure they'll keep the cool exterior neon signage like every other tired hipster interloper. Fuck your bagels, man.

  7. Is it too soon to agree with the last commenter? At the outset, they said they were going to retain the interior in tact, which was good news to anyone who had been in there previously. It was in EXCELLENT condition. To come along now and claim that you cannot do what you claimed was your goal is BACK-STABBING the community who initially praised and welcomed you. Now I find out that these bagels are so expensive? WHY IS EVERYTHING BEING REMADE FOR THE WEALTHY? IT'S ANTITHETICAL TO THE VERY SPIRIT AND HISTORY OF THIS NEIGHBORHOOD!

Calories are fuel for our bodies that's true but we still have to eat the right amount to match the activity of a day. You body will burn a donut just as fast as a bagel with similar calorie count.

  9. 40 years from now we'll be able to buy bagels.

  10. It's a bit silly to expect a business moving into a place to keep it as it was. Did DeRobertis keep the place as it was when they moved in?

  11. It may be "silly" for a new business to retain an old business's character when they take over the space, but then don't say very publicly and showily that you intend to do that, Black Seed Bagels.

As for DeReboertis retaining whatever came before it, gee, let me get into my time machine and see what was happening in NINETEEN OH FOUR

  12. DeRobertis was the first tenant in the space ass hat. Do the math.

  13. Uh oh..this is not good news: Bowery Boogie: Black Seed Bagels’ Fiery Exhaust Killing Quality of Life for Residents on Elizabeth Street

If the smoke from their wood burning ovens makes it smell like 11th St is on fire 24x7, then we may have a problem.
