Subway (sandwich shop) closes on 3rd Avenue and NYU

The Subway location at 41 Third Ave. in the base of NYU's Alumni Hall between East Ninth Street and East 10th Street remains closed for now.

The sign on the door notes that they will be closed for a renovation, presumably…

The interior has been stripped clean.

If this is permanent (and it looks like it), then this will mark the fifth Subway sandwich shop to close in the East Village in the past three years, joining the one on the BoweryEast 14th StreetFirst AvenueSecond Avenue

  1. It might be a sign that the target customer is just too "foodie" to go to a strip mall fast food place like Subway however most will line up for a chicken sandwich at Momafuku all day.

  2. There's never anyone in there.

  3. What this space needs is a specialty coffee shoppe which offers fresh bagels (your choice Black Seed, Bagel Bob's, Ess, David's on first avenue and 15th street--you get to choose which sourced oven you want). Seriously what we need is a store that sells buttons, bits of cloth, metro tickets for those waiting for the bus, and do-dads from all over the world. What we don't need is another nail salon, taco store, etc. But in truth what we will get is whoever is willing to pay NYU's rent demands.

No, you are absolutely wrong. I saw somebody in there once.

    I think.

  6. It's crazy that I've lived a few blocks away from this location for years but didn't even know it was there - like, I had Subway storefront blindness or something. But there's been a lot of turnover on those blocks so I guess I'm just not putting in enough effort to remembering the retail.

  7. Maybe a decade ago Subway's food seemed fresh but compared to a market that continues to offer healthier, non-GMO food as the norm, Subway's offerings look pretty gross. All that poured meat and veggies that look like Bunnicula sucked them dry. Vomit.

  8. "retail blindness" is a real thing although none of the big pharmaceutical companies have caught onto it yet....

Unable to tell one corporate chain store or restaurant from another? Do you only see small mom and pop stores but really want corporate sandwiches? "Bland-atra" might be right for you. Side affects include high levels of preservatives and non-digestibable plastics, bored tastebuds, a desire to listen to Taylor Swift and watch endless hours of network TV. Bland-atra will allow you to eat like you live the suburbs but still pay insanely high city rents. Children under the age of 12 do not suffer from retail blindness.

  9. A few blocks north on 3rd Ave, I noticed the Funkinberry is closed and stripped, except for a lot of pink detritus. How long was that in business? Less than a year?

  10. @ Hywel Dda II

Funkiberry was open for 9 months...

  12. Wow! Having 12 shitty sandwich shops with the same garbage in a 14 block radius is a bad idea? I'm shocked! Also, YAY!!!

  13. Not surprised that it closed - they were paying NYU premium rent PLUS franchise fees. Had to be a tough way to make money.

  14. Their so called fresh bread reportedly had plastic bits in it for years. Their spokesperson was a pediphile. The meat is full of chemicals and salt and does its best not to resemble meat. The veggies are bland and least nutritious in the vegetable world -- iceberg lettuce, hard tomatoes, hot banana peppers.

  16. I don't understand all the hate for Subway, but let me tell my Subway horror story.

When I was little, on a family trip to a foreign country, my dad, who was not happy with the local food, ate in a Subway to give himself some relief. And then, many years later, he died of unrelated causes.

I have an idea, though. Suppose people don't eat there - maybe they think the food is bad or whatever. If enough people do this, the places will close.

    Crazy idea, huh?

  17. Appalling place. Worse than McDonalds. The less Subway's, the better.

  18. I LOVE "renuevations" -- especially this one, in which the entire place has been cleared out.

Dr. Gecko is right -- we can make 'em go away by simply NOT patronizing undesirable chain stores.

5 down, 4 to go. Subway will NOT be missed....
