Well, it's apparently lights out now for DF Mavens, the vegan ice cream shop and cafe on the northwest corner of Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place.
The shop is dark... and there is a sign...
However, according to a DFM Facebook post this afternoon: "Our St. Marks location is closed until further notice. We are still available at retail locations."
Not sure what "until further notice" means here.
Anyway, the shop was open for business yesterday.
DF Mavens opened their first retail space here on Dec. 26, 2014. The storefront was previously home to Eastside Bakery (.net?)
And this corner continues to be a tough spot for any retail establishment. Maybe it's time to bring back the Gap!

This news is much less shocking than all the free electricity ConEd is donating to everyone's dogs this week.mits too bad since this spot would have been a great location for Pomme Frites, which still hasn't opened their new west village location. DF Mavens took more time to open this store than they were in business here. Next time they should try taking less than a year to open a store, and timing grand opening of a frozen dessert store in the middle of the coldest and snowiest winter on record was truly genius. Even Funkiberry was busier than this spot. Next.

This is a shame. I liked their vegan desserts.

ReplyDeleteThe JAS Mart spot has been vacant for several years. Why? Is it the real estate tax deal? In a free market, prices are made to balance supply and demand. Why does this not happen in the NYC commercial real estate market? Can any real estate people out there provide an answer?

ReplyDeleteThis is one of those businesses when its closing is reported here it is also the first time I ever hear of its existence. Maybe I am unable to read a sign that has the word "frozen xyz" on it.

ReplyDeleteBreast milk is certainly not vegan, but it is perfectly good food for developing humans. Cannot believe it has come to this, people are trying to poopoo breast milk now.
ReplyDeleteWhy did they close, then say they were "working on it" as if they would soon reopen, and now today they announce the store has in fact closed? This is worse than the fake "under renovation" announcements. They could have been more upfront with their few loyal customers. But then I guess they can just blame malnutrition from an unbalalanced vegan diet for all the confusion.

Operative word there is "developing." Also, milk to feed a human infant should come from a human breast, not a cow breast.

ReplyDelete4:01 good lord - you can't tell that dairy = cow (or another animal) breast milk? No one is poo pooing human breast milk which not a lot of dairy is made out of in case you didn't know. It is unnatural for an adult to consume any breast milk and dairy from cows is for CALVES not humans.

ReplyDeleteI have no opinion about vegan ice cream as a whole but I do have reservations about DF Mavens' Saudi ownership. There are better and more local vegan ice cream places to give your money to, if that's your thing. I was just waiting this one out and am happy it was a shorter wait than expected.
