The Strokes now popping up on the Bowery

The Strokes have a new EP out on Friday, when they also headline the Governors Ball on Randall's Island.

Ahead of all this, the band (and Cult Records, the label run by frontman Julian Casablancas) opened a pop-up shop today at 350 Bowery between Great Jones and East Fourth Street.

The shop, open noon to 9 p.m. (except Thursday night, when there's a listening party for the new EP) through Sunday, is selling the band's previous records and other merchandise... there are also some DJ sets planned... not to mention an espresso bar by Everyman Espresso.

  1. I remember when I moved into the neighborhood 37 years ago, the Bowery was a bunch of flophouses with winos sleeping on the sidewalk. Well, it sure has changed. Now we have Blue & Cream and other assorted high-end stores. I liked it better then. Used to meet my girlfriend at Phebe's around 2 or 3 AM for a night cap. (I worked a night job.) Distinctly remember Jacques Butler, the trumpet player hanging out there and probably ran into Basquiat a few times. Detectives from the 9th precinct also used to gather there. Saw a few great Cop vs. Cop fights in the back room.

  2. Fabrizio Moretti did an art piece for the art wall at the designer clothing store on Houston St., Rag and Bone. I wonder if the Strokes are on the celebrity list for the Lowline. It seems to be a LES priority to celebrities, which includes Lena dunham and Spike Jones.
