Melt Shop bringing grilled cheese sandwiches to 4th Avenue

Signage has arrived at 135 Fourth Ave., where another location of Melt Shop is coming soon.

This looks to be the fifth Manhattan location for the expanding quick-serve restaurant that specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches (and tater tots).

This location between East 13th Street and East 14th Street has applied for a beer and wine license. They are on the June CB3-SLA docket, though the item won't be heard during the committee meeting.

The previous tenant, Desi Shack, the quick-serve Indian-Pakistani restaurant, closed in April after less then two years.

  1. Unfortunately, another melted dairy cheese shop isn't nearly as newsworthy as the first all-vegan pizzeria. I understand you can't cover it because it's in Brooklyn, but Screamer's Pizza opens today at 640 Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint.

In my opinion, that's huge news—not just for vegans and lactose-intolerant people, but for people who will go to grab a slice and not realize the cheese isn't made with dairy. (At the previous spot, called Champs Junior because it was a tiny luncheonette version of the vegan restaurant Champs, there were people who ate there not realizing there was no meat or dairy in their food.)

  2. I miss the vegan pizza shop on 2nd Ave. that closed three or four years ago. Are there any others in or near the EV?

  3. To Bill: Viva Herbal Pizza on 12th and 2nd was part of the Cafe Viva mini-chain, and wasn't primarily vegan anyway—only offered certain vegan things.

Two Boots has easily as many vegan offerings—including the V for Vegan slice—considering that any pizza that doesn't have meat or fish is automatically vegetarian.

Two Boots is very vegan-friendly and even offered a Free Pizza night at the end of November to cap off the end of World Vegetarian Month.

  5. Maybe this place will have great bread and better cheese than American cheese (product) to elevate this childhood classic.

  6. I resent having to look at this horrible artwork! Who thought this was a good idea? I love cheese and I love sandwiches but this makes me want to boycott the place.

  7. More power to these people and good luck but isn't grilled cheese just bread and cheese heated up on a hot flat surface? Make 'em at home easily! We have great grocery stores where you can easily "source" top quality breads and cheeses yourself! Personally I leave stuff like pizza, bbq, sushi, pastries, etc to the professionals--I have a hard time producing those things in my kitchen. Grilled cheese however is no problem. What's next, a cold cereal shop?

  8. I draw the line at making sushi at home, although I probably could figure it out. But grilled cheese... unless at a classic diner and I'm in a really bad mood, then I can manage it at home.

But...like mac n' cheese... it's an outing for some people nowadays! You know, on Planet Mirth, the money just runs out of the faucets. $12 bucks, $20 bucks for lunch... no problem!

  9. Bill--there's a vegan pizzeria on Second bet 3rd and 4th: 00+Co. (As in "zero zero," for the flour they use.) Haven't been but have heard good things.

  10. if any of you dimwits want to come over and bread and fry some chicken, then grill it up in a sandwich with some cheese let me know. or any of the other types of sandwiches they do, because you're all such great cooks.

They already have those in England.
