ReplyDeleteA true EV scene. Yes Del Blase is the worst. Yes this is sad. But...it was, is and always will be the EV. Once these kids stop hanging out in the EV the edge will go with them. Nobody seems to remember the 60's or early 70's. It was the same back then.
ReplyDeleteBesides...what's wrong with it? These kids are where they want to be. They hang together, eat together, sleep together, have fun together. They are not quite as poor as they might have you believe. They all have cell phones. None of these kids has ever died of starvation in the EV. They don't bother anyone. In fact, some of these kids are really nice kids....although their hygiene is plain old disgusting.
So let's be kind people. These kids, who you belittle by calling them crusties are possibly your family's friends kids having the city adventure of living on the street for a year or two.....or some of them...just the summer.
So scenes like this repulse hipster dip shits and monied transients who have been ruining the Lower East Side for the rest of us?

By virtue of their ability to pay astronomical amounts for living space here, these fucking parasites have the ARROGANCE to believe they can demand the removal of that which preceded them here!!

ReplyDeleteBut I'm wondering, is it true that the "crusty-punks" are all upper class youth doing this because they can? Are there ever really any truly poor youth moving from small town america to do this? Like young people whose parents didn't go to college and don't need to rebel against their privilege? When I'm in this area and see these folks, I try to look up close. It's not perfect but I often wonder if the youth are from privileged backgrounds. What's in it for them? Every once in a while I do think I hear or read about someone truly coming from poverty and trying to survive outside of the 'system' because they truly have no other place to go.
I don't think most crusties do come from privileged backgrounds. It's a pretty shitty way to live. You don't usually get from Westchester to sitting around in your own filth or sprawling out on a hot pavement like an animal except via alcohol or (in particular) IV drugs. Probably coming from more resources than your average barefoot-Penn-Station-sleeping older man, but in worse shape than people would have believe.

ReplyDeleteIt's funny that some are saying this is so sad - we didn't need the EV to be "shiny and new" - it was AWESOME before, crusties and all... They ARE doing what they want - they travel all over the country like this. The "shiny and new" Astor Place is disgusting, sad and soulless - truly midtown south, so enough already.
ReplyDeleteChris Flash I'm with you. The EV was far better off without the brainless baby carriage transplants that should go back to the corn fields where they came from. Crusties and street people alike represent 'real life' in the EV, a place fit for all walks of life which is why I live here to begin with, And as far as Animal Rights People - most Crusties pride themselves with taking care of their dogs that are generally well behaved. For every Crustie a bus load of ARROGANT Corporate Culture Hipsters with their baby carriage values should be banned from our neighborhood!
