ReplyDeleteI accept that there will be fireworks at the East River once a year -- it's easily enough avoided -- but every year about an hour after the main celebration, some yahoo sets his own fireworks off on the roof of a building that neighbors mine. It freaks me the fuck out because I never know when it's going to start (until I jump out of my skin at the first explosion), it is SO LOUD and I'm on a low floor! I can't even imagine what this must be like for animals on top floors, older people with heart conditions, parents with sleeping children, anyone suffering from PTSD especially veterans ...
ReplyDeleteAnd that's not even to mention all of the horrific accidents caused by these amateur fireworks artists -- a kid had his foot blown off in Central Park yesterday when he stepped on some abandoned homemade explosive that cops say are common to find this time of year. Not only did he lose his foot, the explosion was loud enough to seriously alarm everyone at the Elie Weisel memorial many blocks away, who probably thought it was the start of a terrorist attack.
I don't want to be a fuddy duddy or rain on people's fun, but there's a time and place for public explosives and it's not on a tenement roof or in the middle of a public park FFS.
