The 26th annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade is Oct. 22
[Photo yesterday by Steven]
The posters are up in Tompkins Square Park... the Dog Parade is Oct. 22 from noon to 3 p.m.
Giuliana Rancic, host of E!'s Live from the Red Carpet and co-host of Fashion Police, is the emcee.
Find more details here. Relive last year's costumes here.

Are you kidding?!?!? Giuliana Rancic?!?!? NO THANKS! This used to be such a fun neighborhood event... now it seems taking on a DoggieCon like sense.
ReplyDeleteWhat about a Halloween parade for those of us with cats?
ReplyDeleteIf Zendaya shows up I hope Giuliana Rancic doesn't make any rude comments about her doggie's dreadlocks.
ReplyDeleteI never imagined I'd come to consider an event featuring adorable innocent animals as something to avoid, but Avenue A is a nightmare of pedestrian gridlock when this comes to town. At this point it seems like the massive crowds would stress the pups out, but I'm a cat lady and, like my kittens, prefer to stay indoors where other people are not.
ReplyDelete>^..^<
I am grateful that dog people are mostly responsible and no one has tried to add a drinking element onto this.
Exactly. What about the cat owners of this neighborhood? We don't get to participate in a similar event? Our cats are just as meaningful as your dogs.
ReplyDeleteOh please cats are way too dignified for this sort of thing. I mean my kids have been known to rock matching fleece sweaters and handknit scarves from their also-a-cat-lady grandmother, but they wouldn't abide silly costumes and they definitely would not be down with crowds and loud voices and basic public silliness, and my cats are actually abnormally not-haughty, so I can only imagine how most cats would feel about a costume parade. I would love to bring them to the noble Blessing of the Pets sometime but I'd have to get one of those special strollers and I'm not ready for that stage of cat lady (yet, who knows what the future brings ...)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, back on topic. The cats and cat owners of this neighborhood do have our own event: the quiet superiority of staying home and taking kitty pics for our Instagrams. "Elegance is refusal." -- Diana Vreeland
"Too dignified"?
ReplyDeleteMan, you have not been on youtube.
(stereotype much?)
(stereotype much?)
ReplyDeleteBecause I was clearly being super serious business about the dignity of cats and cat people as I typed cat emoticons and talked about my kittens' sweater wardrobe. You must be a ferret person.* I hope society recognizes your people with a parade soon so you can stop being so cranky.
>^..^< >^..^< >^..^<
* jk jk ferrets and their people, I love all god's creatures!!
My cat wouldn't be a part of something like this. He's too refined and finicky. Cats aren't like dogs. They are too dissimilar. Dogs will do anything and give love freely. If you have a cat, you must earn its love and respect, and even then, nothing is promised or infinite. Cats must look at something like that parade and think, "Seriously? This is strange. I am going home to rest and ponder life."
ReplyDeleteNote to cat owners: Organize your own parade. How hard is that?
ReplyDeleteI love the Halloween Dog Parade. This is probably the highlight of the East Village social calendar. And I'm glad that it's grown to such international renown. It shows us all at our best.
WTF "the East Village social calendar" Is their a cotillion happening that we minions are not aware of.
ReplyDeleteWhy are others picking on cat owners? Why are we suddenly or somehow deemed inadequate or unimportant?
ReplyDeleteI love dogs. Some of my best friends have them. They're great pets and have a huge following. However, I wouldn't want my cat in attendance at the parade because a majority of the medium to larger dogs would probably scare and go after my little, furry guy. Cats are somewhat calmer animals and don't need much attention or maintenance. But to each their own. Why can't dog and cat people just get along?
This event, once a community gathering that involved - and was supported by - local businesses, now has 2 corporate sponsors. With all respect, having been a long time frequenter of the dog park, I'd like to know how much money is being raised every year, who is responsible for it, and what is it being used for. Theoretically, this money is being raised in the name of the TSQ dog run and it's community for the purposes of upkeep/maintanance. The dog run was renovated about 7 years ago and has fallen into disrepair due to neglect. No officers or board of directors are listed anywhere on the website or the bulletin boards in the park.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 123, The East Village social calendar are the events that occur during the year that are open to the public. Duh!
ReplyDeleteI'm tired of these parades each year, filthy animals, humping everything that moves, barking at nice young ladies, pooping and pissing all over our neighborhood in silly costumes!....oh wait, I thought this was SantaCon
ReplyDeleteYeah and the corporate sponsors are petsmart and nestle. Look em-up, not exactly responsible companies that treat people or animals well.
ReplyDeleteShows us all at our best, I didn't know we needed to impress anyone and if so who might they be? A corporate sponsored event that takes over a huge part of a public part shows us at our best? I think residents rallying outside of buildings owned by Crowman and Icon, or rallying to preserve the character of our community from being wiped out by developers to build hotels or lux housing, shows us at our best. Duh!
ReplyDeleteCats rule!
ReplyDeleteThe problem with a cat parade is most cats don't want to be walked or deal with throngs of people.
ReplyDeleteMy mother's cat is the sweetest cat you'll ever find if it's just her, me, and maybe two other people. More than that and the cat literally runs and hides most if not all of the day/night and warily comes out only to eat. I'm fairly certain there are countless cats just like that. Cats are extremely territorial and retreat if they're outnumbered, so a parade really wouldn't work.
Giuiana Rancic? Get the fuck out of here. You've got to be kidding me. Disgusting.
ReplyDeleteOne of the commenters is right. My cat, along like her mother's cat, would probably flip out if he had to be in public, amongst hundreds of strangers, to be displayed and gawked at. Dogs like people, are more social. My cat likes me, couple of my friends and that's it. He's ultra independent, warm, affectionate, yet discerning.
ReplyDeleteEven going to the vet for an annual visit is an undertaking, especially when I have to take him in his carrier in the cab. He is insanely loud, which he is never is, screams, and shakes. Why would I as a cat owner put my him through something so terrifying such a parade? He could literally die from shock.
I think this parade should be left to the dogs. It is always fun to see them dressed up each year. Dogs are just very different creatures and engage with humans in another way. They love this kind of stuff. Cat's not so much. They stick their noses to this.
