A look at Shepard Fairey's mural Rise Above, now complete on 11th Street at 1st Avenue

Shepard Fairey's mural on 11th Street at First Avenue is complete. (He started work on Wednesday.)

The L.I.S.A. Project's Wayne Rada told DNAinfo:

[T]he goal of the undertaking is to supply some brightness and positivity for the locals wandering below — especially the children coming and going from neighboring elementary school.P.S. 19.

The mural features an image of Fairey's daughter when she was 3 years old. (She is now 11.)

  1. Rise above what? I get that public art tends to the less provocative because all kinds of people have to look at it every day, but this is some meaninglessnessish. Just put up pretty pictures and don't pretend to be deep when you aren't.

  7. Faux socio-political rubbish. Lame. A clown painting on black velvet would be more insipiring.

  10. Don't mind the poverty and the derelicts lying on the sidewalks and in front of vacant shuttered storefronts. Look up at the pretty mural and keep smiling.

Can't wait for the bombing (tagging over that is, don't want to be misunderstood after the intentional incident in Chelsea, or be confused with nefarious slumlord tactics)

  11. Bland, colorful, and absolutely meaningless - the perfect metaphor for 2016 New York. Those of you who consider this art have no recollection of earlier decades when street art had real political overtones, instead of being what looks like a billboard advertising Asian beer.

  12. The art work doesn't bother me. The guy is talented. But what is he trying to say? And do I want to hear it? The girl seems to be a Chinese worker. It reminds me of Mao. And didn't he kill millions in a "cultural revolution"? The image also brings to mind the PLA(The People's Liberation Army) and Unit 61398 The are the hackers who brought down our electrical grid about 10 years ago. And who are currently hacking American businesses, government offices and the White House. Is he trying to praise China? And "Rise above"... what? Chinese criminality?

  13. Come on COOL...a huge cooooool spray painted over that will improve it immensely and then Shep can sue Cool for stealing his art because Shep is the first person to ever say the word COOL as we all know.
