East Village venues playing host again to SantaCon

SantaCon organizers took to Twitter last evening to announce "the amazing Seven Spots of Santacon 2016," which takes place this Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

And those seven spot of SantaConning include two East Village venues, Solas and Webster Hall. The full list:

• Ainsworth Park, 111 East 18th St.
• 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar, 230 5th Ave.
• Slake, 251 West 30th St.
• Madison Square Tavern
• Webster Hall, 125 East 11th St.
• Bar 13, 35 East 13th St.
• Solas, 232 East 9th St.

The SantaConning participants will be spread far and wide. As Patch reported:

In addition to these core venues, around 50 participating bars will open their doors to the Santas and offer special SantaCon deals. Those bars — along with the route's exact starting point — will be announced [tonight].

The East Village also served as SantaCon central last year.

And from the archives last year, Gothamist interviewed the organizer of SantaCon, East Village resident Jim Glaser (not named here but in a subsequent feature in the Times).

34 comments:

  1. Where does Jim live? We should all get together and puke on his doorstep

  2. The Gothamist article says Jim G grew up in Manhattan. And he says of Santcaon: "The point is to have a nonsensical get-together for public street theater, for making New York exciting and weird."

I would think a native New yorker would realize that santacon only makes NY lame and suburban.

  7. You didn't need to be a Psychic & Advisor to figure this one out. Quality of life is a thing of the past or only for those living in the richest neighborhoods in the city. The city has whored out the EV and LES for trashy hedonist events and then like a good pimp collect taxes from alcohol sales. Fuck Santa Con, its organizers and City Hall.

  8. They forgot to mention the Bull and Bear Bar at The Waldorf Towers, The Oak Room at the Plaza and the Oyster Bar in Grand Central Station. The Santa's will be mixing with tourists in luxury surroundings and have a chance to get smashed alongside radicals from Occupy Wall Street. However, because of gender prejudice there will be no female Santa's this year per Executive-Elect Order #1 by this years Grand Reindeer of Santa Con expounding the simple phrase, "Let's Make Santa Con Great Again."

  14. Follow the money, how much is Jimmy G making off of this every year?

  15. You can bet NYPD will be AWOL for this event as they're all earning overtime outside Trump Tower.

If you see any bad behavior, document it. Nearly everyone has a camera phone, but each year CB3 tells us they don't receive any complaints about this debacle.

  16. This event is a shit show and a fucking joke. I absolutely hate it. Especially living in the east village. This sucks....

    1. If the result is a bunch of people puking and pissing in the streets it is that bad, actually. Not to mention the fights later in the evening. You see some of them and just wonder how on earth will they make it to where home is... sad lot who need some hobbies other than the tipple.

  18. What's truly "amazing" is that this shit show is allowed to be promoted and held every year.

  24. @3:34pm: No arrests - that just tells me *somebody* is paying off the people who should be policing this event. Follow the money - who benefits from SantaCon? Are any cops owners/silent owners of bars? Who's getting $$ put into their pockets to look the other way?

Why does the NYPD not actually control this shitshow - b/c they sure as hell would if it were called "Occupy Wall Street" or "Attack Trump Tower"!

    1. Santa Con is completely bogus. But get off the high horse about Occupy Wall Street.

Lest anyone forget, that turned into a literal shit show. Unsanitary conditions, sexual abuse, profiteering organizers and all sorts of unsavory hangers on. Some of whom were armed.

Santa Con is stupid and douchey. But the main thing those dopes plan on occupying is a few bars most sane people wouldn't patronize anyway...

  25. SantaCon = SantaLOSERS.

  26. @PJ: You are missing the point. The NYPD just doesn't police or do anything about this annual shitshow that fucks with our neighborhood.

WHY don't these people need a permit, when they take over our nabe for an entire day? Street fairs need permits, protest marches need permits, parades need permits - and "Occupy Wall Street" is something that suddenly "needed" a permit when the NYPD felt like it. Yet somehow Santacon gets away with this shit every.single.year. WHY? Who's getting paid off? I draw my own conclusion about this.

  27. Who's getting paid off? LOL, don't be silly.

  28. @7:11am: HI, JIM GLASER!

  29. I hate this event as well, but it's funny to hear East Villagers (I grew up on Avenue C in the 70's and 80's) complaining about quality of life existing only in the richest neighborhoods, when most of you are paying $3,000 a month for studios or are living in newly constructed doorman buildings.

  30. Grateful for my warm home and being alive and well Pray for peace daily
Imagine if the santas Where mostly Mexican or Afro American some how the crowd patrol with pepper spray bombs would be out and there would be many arrests Being a native, not sure how this is allowed in our city
ALL COULD COMPLAIN TO CB 3, Mayors office & Rosie Mendez Maybe if enough complaints went in there will be no more SC YEAH

  31. Why not post the organizer's actual address, apartment number and phone numbers so we can write and call him. I wonder how he would deal with the "noise" we could create all year round by stuffing his mail box with countless letters and phone calls all day long from noon till 8pm.
