Sugar Cafe, the slender 24/7 mainstay on East Houston and Allen Street these past 10-plus years, is expected to shut down after service on Sunday.
DNAinfo confirmed the closure with three employees last evening. BoweryBoogie had previously heard that a rent increase — perhaps as much as double the current ask — was behind the closing.
Always enjoyed the sight of this place as I drive uptown. Picturesque.
ReplyDeleteI had a really bad date there once. But for some reason, it always felt comforting to pass it by when I was on the way to the Sunshine or Whole Foods. This place is part of the neighborhood. Now, it will be gone.
ReplyDeleteSad :(
The space is just the right shape and configuration for a bar. Mark my words.
ReplyDeleteUsed to be "Economy Foam & Futon". A very thrifty store, a throwback to when the LES was the Bargain District. It had a very large colorful sign and a striped awning, piles of goods on the sidewalk.
ReplyDeleteThe name probably didn't help since sugar is now being demonized as if the substance itself - rather than the obesity it can cause - is a major problem.
ReplyDeleteWhat was so "bad" about your date there? You can tell us :)
ReplyDeleteThis is in response for Anon 3:02 am: My date there went like this: a man I met online in 2008 talked incessantly about his ex-boyfriend from the get go. Upon looking the menus, he insisted we could not order anything with dairy because it gave him, "bad diarrhea." We had met on OkCupid. I thought he seemed normal and handsome. When we met, he was ten years older (52 not 42) and twenty pounds heavier(185 not 165 pounds) than the picture that was posted. It was the worst hour and 15 minutes of my dating life. I kept looking at my watch and struggled to find a way to get out of it. When I told him I had to leave to meet another friend (a lie), he wished to remain and have a piece of cherry pie. Also, when he asked me to dinner initially, he insisted on taking me out. "His treat," he declared during our IM. When the check arrived, he said we should go "dutch" all the while talking about how hot and hung his ex boyfriend was and how he still pined for him but how he was open to meeting new people, all the while telling me he was a psychologist with his own practice. I paid my portion and literally bolted out the door when he requested my email address. Needless to say, I lost his number intentionally and never spoke to him again. Whenever I walked by Sugar Cafe, year after year, I remembered we sat at a table in the window near the back. Sugar is/was a cute and unique place I won't forget :)
ReplyDeleteBye Sugar Cafe :(
