Heroes

David Bowie died on this day in 2016. The video here is a live version of "Life on Mars?" — one of my all-time favorite songs.

  1. I still miss him very much. I'm moving from NYC within a year in part because he's not here anymore. The old, good NY he used to inhabit is gone. It's much emptier without him.

  2. This is so perfectly and beautifully appropriate for the date. Transcendental. Hadn’t seen it before. Thank you for sharing it.

  3. This is not only one of Bowies best, but one of the best songs of all time. In the short lived Scorsese HBO series Vinyl, there is a scene where the next big musical act plays the song on a piano after a wedding reception, and it is mesmerizing. It’s another reason why we miss David Bowie every day.

  4. Hard to understate Bowie's genius and contribution to rock music. For me druggy Bowie of the 70's was his most fertile period. In addition to his own recording work he produced amazing albums for Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, and Mott the Hoople. Diamond Dogs sounds as fresh as the day it was recorded. The drums and bass Earthling from the 90s is another standout showing how Bowie could assimilate contemporary sounds and put his own stamp on them. And literally making original music until the day he died. His greatest vocal performance and one of best songs might be the sonic orgy of Teenage Wildlife.
