Another reader report of a fireworks-related roof fire on Avenue C

The FDNY responded to a report of a fire last night around 9:45 on the southwest corner of Fifth Street and Avenue C... a nearby resident shared these photos...

The cause of the fire is unknown, though the resident suspects it was related to the ongoing illegal firework displays nearby... the reader points out the remains of fireworks in the lights of the fire truck in the photo below...

There wasn't any word of damage to the building, which houses 69 Avenue C Laundromat...

Last Saturday night, people setting off fireworks along Avenue C and neighboring buildings caused a fire on a building rooftop on Fourth Street.

Fireworks-related complaints to 311 and 911 topped 20,000 in 2020, "an unprecedented increase over previous years," Gothamist reported.

The NYPD has started making arrests...

  1. For the past several nights huge fireworks are being set off all night along Avenue D just north of Houston Street. These are not small little firecrackers but the big stuff that goes up 100 feet in the air and explodes in a multicolored display. It is nice to look at but hard to get any sleep when it sounds like a bomb is going off every minute.

  2. Are the fireworks coming from the Lillian Wald NYCHA houses east of Ave. D? I found a phone number for them. It's 212-673-9306.
Probably the only solution is to contact the management of each building and have them put in place a strong warning to the tenants.
Hopefully a miscreant could be evicted for endangering the life and property of other people. Not counting on this however.

I saw some miscreants letting off fireworks Tuesday on the plaza east of Ave. D at 8th Street about 7pm Tuesday, after I heard them and then walked there from Tomkins Sq. Park.

  3. This is not harmless fun. These kids and young adults are causing a lot of pain an anguish for older people that need to sleep and otherwise get agitated from what sounds like constant gunfire or bombs going off. The mayor should hire more police to stop this immediately.

  4. This is a good start (if weeks too late). I hope the NYPD will stay on top of this for the next 10 days.

Whoever is doing this is heedless of human life and safety; they don't seem to care the extent of damage they can do. This is the 2nd instance this week of the FDNY having to put out a fireworks-related roof fire. WTF are people thinking? And do kids have parents any more??

If I knew anyone who was doing this, I'd be calling the NYPD to come arrest them.

  6. The police will do nothing because of the recent demonstrations and calls to defund the police. I talked to one at the station on Ave. C and 8th St. after I returned from Ave. D, and he told me that they are not going to do anything because of the recent protests. I asked him if they'd do anything if someone were shot, and he shrugged his shoulders.
Having said that, it seems that the fireworks' activity has dropped off this evening. Hopefully it will be like this until July 4.

  7. A group of young people have been brazenly igniting the fireworks directly in front of el jardín del paraiso on E 5th St between Aves C/D as well as in the courtyard in between the NYCHA buildings on E 5th and E 6th.

  8. I’ve lived on this block most of my life and I’ve never heard fireworks this loud. I have clear footage of that night but I’m not sure how to upload it from here...
