Pie by the Pound closed here in July 2019 after 17 years in business. A regular told us at the time that the lease was up, and the owner wanted to pursue other opportunities.

The city will have to finally re-think the policies and the immense pressure it has placed on small businesses these past decades. Now that corporate chains have creeped back to suburban America leaving large and small commercial leases insanely inflated the prospect of opening a small business seems completely impossible, perhaps the first time since the 1930's. There will a tremendous tax revenue deficit and the city will need to turn on the 1% which it has courted since 2001 to pay taxes as we end corporate welfare. Bloomberg / De Blasio have all but killed the future of a strong middle and working class New York City, services, schools and as always the poor will suffer the most.
ReplyDeleteThe 1 percent are leaving and aren't coming back. The city needs to be realistic and cut spending dramatically. NYC spends more on everything than any other city or state. The 1 percent isn't the problem. The city council is.
DeleteAgree with @11:36am: NYC needs to value and actually do something FOR small businesses and the people who run them.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like NYC decided that small businesses are just there for the plucking, which is EXACTLY the wrong approach. All the fees & fines and infinite paperwork are unsustainable, and represent a city that has chosen to take an adversarial, rather than a supportive, approach to small entrepreneurs.
It doesn't have to be this way!
