The original Coyote Ugly at 153 First Ave. between Ninth Street and 10th Street has closed ... EVG regular Lola Sáenz spotted workers clearing out the space yesterday...
The saloon was said to be moving to new space on 14th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. We're waiting on confirmation of the address. [Update: Looks like the former Blind Pig space.]Meanwhile, the bar's CEO and founder, Lil Lovell, made the announcement on Saturday about the closure of the very first Coyote Ugly:
We are living in unprecedented times. In comparison to the global pandemic, violence stemming from racial inequality, the raging wildfires, etc., my news is comparatively small— but it is deeply personal and I would like to share it.The original Coyote Ugly Saloon, on 1st Avenue in New York City, has closed its doors forever. We have been shuttered for 6 months in accordance with New York State Covid-19 restrictions and simply cannot continue to pay the rent. I want to thank all of the former employees, customers, friends, and family that made that little bar so very special. I celebrated so many memorable milestones within those walls. The bar — and you — will forever be part of who I am.
At the end of the video she teases a new NYC location — one with "better bathrooms."
Coyote Ugly opened here in January 1993... the bar started expanding in 2001, first in Las Vegas, then later with several global franchises... spurred on perhaps by the cheesy cinematic classic of the same name.
There would be so many fond memories...if not for all the blackouts.
ReplyDeleteWho cares about Coyote! ohh yeah I forgot prom party girls!! LOL
ReplyDeleteSteve Croman is still the virus with no vaccine. I'm sure a more reasonable landlord would encourage them to stay.
ReplyDeletealmost 27 years in the EV and I’ve never been there
ReplyDeleteIsn't there an expiration date on the appeal of fake cowgirls strutting on bartops?
ReplyDelete@9:52am: Almost 50 years in the EV and have never been there!
ReplyDeleteBut new location will allow bro's to behave dumber than ever.
The space that the Blind Pig most recently occupied would seem to make the most sense for the move.

ReplyDeleteno.
Take me back to that spot in the early 1980's when it was a wonderful, friendly neighborhood gay bar called The Last Resort! Filled with artists, actors, ordinary (and not so ordinary!)east village locals. I loved it there. Met great people.
ReplyDeleteHogs & Heifers in the old Meatpacking District was the "real coyote ugly" to many of us in the 90's.
ReplyDeleteNah, before the movie Coyote was the better bar, scuzzier and badass. Then they had to change it to be more like the PG movie and it filled up with douches. Hogs did too, because they started a rumor they were the inspiration for the movie to cash in. Both joints became tourist traps, but good on them for making money I guess.
DeleteThe old Blind Pig space makes perfect sense. One neighbors gain is another neighbors loss. So goes life in the big city.
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad , especially for the pizza shops
ReplyDeleteafter the drinking.
Also, made the block less empty at night.
Hell no H20!
ReplyDeleteThanks Older Historian. I remember the gay bar but could not remember the name!
ReplyDelete1st between 9th and 10th is a complete ghost town. Do these landlords realize how high the commercial vacancy rate is in the lower east side? Why let tennant's go without trying to negotiate? Who do they think is coming to fill these spaces?
ReplyDeleteI can confirm, they applied for a liquor license at the Blind Pig space next to Beauty Bar. It was on CB6's agenda this month.
ReplyDeleteAn excellent example of good riddance.
ReplyDeleteI've never set foot in that place but the who concept is so lame. If they're taking over the BlindPig Spot I guess it might be a little boon for IHOP.
ReplyDeleteHaha ! Yup Village Idiot was fucking crazy place ! Ran by Tommy. you never knew what would happen when you went inside the Idiot!
