Van Leeuwen reopens post-fire on 7th Street

The Van Leeuwen scoop shop has reopened at 48 1/2 E. Seventh St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

The storefront had been shuttered since the fire wiped out the neighboring building and severely damaged Middle Collegiate Church on Dec. 5.

Van Leeuwen, along with the residents upstairs, had to vacate the address during the demolition work next door

It appears that the residents here are back as well. A mobile boiler is now connected to the building.

  1. What a nightmare for everyone involved. I'm assuming many of those residents are working from home now and they will have to endure the demo/construction next door that will go on for months, if not years. It's just blow after blow for this neighborhood.

  2. I am very sorry for the residents (and for the ice cream shop), but at least they HAVE been able to get back to living there, which is no small thing, considering what happened.
